The proposed county-wide animal shelter is the topic of a special joint meeting of the Jefferson city council and the county board of supervisors next Monday, Jan. 23, at 10:30 am at Jefferson’s municipal building at 220 N. Chestnut St.
The steering committee has suggested a 28E agreement between the city and the county for ownership and operation of the shelter, with the county owning the facility and the city and county sharing operating costs. Annual operating costs are estimated at $161,000 per year. That includes a fulltime animal control officer.
Cost to build the shelter are estimated at $1.2 million. Project coordinator Don Orris has volunteered to head fundraising, with no tax dollars going into constructing or equipping the building.
