(Expanded Wednesday morning)
Ashley Johnston, the last Greene County board of education member who formerly served on the East Greene board, has resigned. She was first elected to the East Greene board in 2011 and was appointed by that board to serve on the Greene County school board when it was formed by the reorganization of the East Greene and Jefferson-Scranton schools.
She was re-elected to the Greene County board in 2015. Her term expires in 2019.
Johnston told GreeneCountyNewsOnline she is unable to meet the increased time commitments required in serving on the board.
“I really appreciate my time on the board. I really believe Greene County Schools provide great services and our kids are getting an excellent education,” Johnston said.
District business manager Brenda Muir has posted a public notice that the board will appoint someone to fill the vacancy at the Jan. 18 regular meeting.
Electors of the district can file a petition to call for a special election to fill the vacancy. A valid petition would need to be presented to the school district office at the administrative building (former south grade school) no later than Jan. 26. Signatures of at least 657 eligible voters would be required.
The appointee or the winner of a special election will serve until the school election next September. At that time, voters will elect someone (perhaps the incumbent) to serve until 2019.
