The deadlines for grant applications to the Greene County Community Foundation and Grow Greene County have passed and the two volunteer boards are at work determining how best to use the funds available. Area residents who want to learn skills to help meet their financial goals for 2016 are invited to a two-week program hosted by Iowa Extension and Outreach, “Your Money, Your Future: Making Ends Meet.”

About 125 girls with their dads, granddads or other very special men-folk enjoyed a special evening at the Daddy Daughter Dance hosted by the Jefferson park and recreation department at the Greene County Community Center Friday night. Musical Edge Sound and Lighting Design provided a wide variety of party songs, slow dances, and even some Disney tunes for singing along.…

Breakfast will be served by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, and the American Legion Saturday, Feb. 27, at the VFW hall on the east side of the courthouse square in Jefferson.

PAWS (People for Animal Welfare Society) will host an open house Saturday, Feb. 27, from 10 am to noon at the animal shelter, located at 605 W. Russell St, Jefferson. PAWS has “cuddly canines” and many “fabulous felines,” in varying ages, sizes, colors and temperaments, available for adoption.

Although it’s hidden by a very large pile of dirt, work on Phase Two of the construction/renovation project at Greene County Medical Center is continuing on schedule. The Greene County High School jazz choir, the Jazzatonics, placed first at the North Polk Comet Sensation vocal jazz competition last Saturday, Feb. 13. Seniors Victoria Sims and Jacob Wittry both received Outstanding Soloist awards. The Jazzatonics followed that by earning straight Division I ratings at the Iowa High School Music Association jazz choir contest held in Jefferson Feb. 17.

The week that ended Feb. 19 at 6 am finished better than it started. By the end of the week the amount of snow cover had greatly diminished as temperatures were well above freezing.
