Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Saturday, Dec. 31: At 5:35 pm a deputy investigated a car-deer accident on County Road N-65 (D Ave) and County Road E-19 (140th St) in Cedar Township. The driver had left the scene. At 6:30 pm a deputy conducted tobacco compliance checks on all stores in the county; Fareway in Jefferson was out of compliance.
Friday, Dec. 30: At 2:49 am a deputy investigated a semi with its back tires in the ditch at Highway 4 and 140th St in Dawson Township.
Thursday, Dec. 29: At 7:36 am a deputy investigated a burglary to a building in the 1500 block of F Ave in Scranton Township. At 8:24 am a deputy investigated a theft in the 400 block of E. Paton St in Paton. At 7:09 pm a deputy investigated a complaint of a coyote chasing dogs in the 200 block of 1st St in Cooper. At 9:23 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious person in the 300 block of Hager St in Grand Junction.
Wednesday, Dec. 28: At 10:31 am a deputy investigated a burglary to a hog confinement in the 600 block of Highway 4 in Dawson township. At 12 pm a deputy investigated a burglary to a hog confinement in the 1100 block of County Road P-14 in Bristol Township. At 1:07 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 1800 block of 283rd St in Franklin Township. At 1:17 pm a deputy investigated a burglary to a garage in the 1500 block of County Road E-26 (170th St) in Hardin Township. At 2:02 pm a deputy investigated a burglary to a storage building in the 1600 block of T Ave in Junction Township. At 2:04 pm a deputy investigated a report of dead deer on Highway 4 west of Churdan. At 9:27 pm a deputy investigated a single car accident on E-19 and P-14 in Churdan. Timothy Hoyle of Churdan lost control of his 2008 Kia Optima and went into the ditch and struck a power pole. Alliant Energy, Churdan fire and Greene County EMS responded to the scene.
Tuesday, Dec. 27: At 10:07 am a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 1800 block of T Ave in Junction Township. At 6:54 pm a deputy investigated a trespass complaint in the 300 block of 167th St in Kendrick Township.
Monday, Dec. 26: At 8:13 pm a deputy assisted with removing two stray cats from a residence in the 100 block of Merriam St in Farlin. At 9:28 pm a deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle in the 1800 block of T Ave in Junction Township.
Sunday, Dec. 25: At 8:34 am a deputy was advised of the possibility of a snowmobile breaking through the ice on the Raccoon River south of Jefferson.
Saturday, Dec. 24: At 12:15 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 2100 block of P Ave in Franklin Township for an abandoned vehicle that had driven off the roadway and came to rest in a farm field. The vehicle was towed to the impound lot. At 12:32 pm a JPD officer assisted a deputy with checking a suspicious vehicle at a residence in the 1500 block of Meadow Ave in Bristol Township. At 5:12 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1800 block of T Ave in Franklin Township to investigate a burglary and theft of tools from a farm shop. At 7:47 pm a deputy was unable to locate a dog that was reported to be missing from a residence in the 900 block of Jay St in Churdan.
Friday, Dec 23: At 2:42 pm a deputy took custody of Douglas Kyle Goodman, 27, of Perry after he was arrested by Perry police officers on outstanding Greene County warrants. At 7:50 am a deputy checked several vehicles that entered the ditch on Highway 30 near K Ave west of Jefferson due to the snow covered roadway. No injuries were reported but a citation was issued to one driver for failure to maintain control and causing the other car to enter the ditch. At 9:37 am a deputy was dispatched for another vehicle in the ditch on Highway 144 near 237th St south of Grand Junction. No injuries were reported to the driver with only minimal damage to the vehicle. At 9:42 am a JPD officer assisted a deputy with checking a vehicle that had slid into the ditch on Highway 4 south of Jefferson due to the road conditions. At 1:09 pm a deputy was asked to speak with a resident in the 500 block of Colonial Ave in Cedar Township regarding the theft of a payroll check.
Thursday, Dec. 22: At 3:55 am a deputy provided traffic control on Highway 30 near W Ave east of Grand Junction while a semi-tractor trailer was removed from the roadway. At 10:44 am a deputy was advised by a Greene County resident of her credit card being skimmed at the Kum & Go in Perry. At 1:59 pm the sheriff investigated a burglary to a residence in the 1600 block of T Ave in Junction Township. It is not known at this time if anything was taken. At 8:04 pm a deputy spoke with a juvenile female in the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton about her receiving many unwanted text messages from a juvenile male subject.
Wednesday, Dec. 21: At 6:48 am a deputy was dispatched for a semi-tractor trailer hitting a deer on Highway 30 near Granite Ave east of Scranton. The semi sustained an estimated $3,000 in damages. The driver, Joshua James Ort, 34, of Des Moines was not injured. At 7:35 am a deputy investigated a vehicle that had been abandoned in a farm field driveway in the 1200 block of R Ave in Hardin Township. The car was towed to the impound lot in Jefferson.
Tuesday, Dec. 20: At 7:23 pm, a deputy was dispatched for a single vehicle accident that occurred on 222nd St (“old” Highway 30) just east of Grand Junction. The deputy issued a citation to Cameron Shelby Stevens, 27, of Boone for failure to maintain control of his vehicle after he reported that he was eastbound on 222nd St when he lost control of his 2009 Pontiac, striking the bridge railing at the creek. The air bags deployed and Stevens reported that he was not injured. The vehicle was reported to be a total loss.
Monday, Dec. 19: At 2:08 pm members of the Greene County sheriff’s office, Churdan fire and rescue, the Scranton fire department and the Jefferson fire department all responded to a structure fire in the 900 block of 160th St in Highland Township. A hog confinement building belonging to Jonathan Minnehan of rural Churdan was completely destroyed due to the fire. The building did not have hogs in it at that time, but a similar building to the north was full of butcher hogs and only sustained smoke damage.
Sunday, Dec. 18: At 10:40 pm a deputy was dispatched for a suspicious vehicle that was reported parked at the intersection of 130th St and County Road P-46 (N Ave). Upon the deputy’s arrival, the vehicle was located west P-46 after the vehicle was driven off the roadway. After an investigation and field sobriety testing, the deputy subsequently arrested Zachary Allen Powell, 23, of Lake City for operating while intoxicated- first offense*.
Saturday, Dec. 17: At 3:57 pm a deputy, while on routine patrol, located a vehicle in the ditch on County Road E-53 east of Jefferson on the “S” curves. Alexa Nikoal Anthony, 21, of Jefferson reported that she was westbound and lost control of her 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix on the curve and it entered the ditch. Anthony was not injured but her vehicle was estimated to be a total loss. At 7:38 pm a deputy was advised of a dog running at large in the 600 block of Hill St in Churdan. The described dog was not located at that time.
Friday, Dec. 16: At 9:42 am, a deputy assisted a Meskwaki police officer with helping determine the identity of several Greene County residents involved in criminal acts in Tama County. At 11:55 am deputies were advised of the burglary and theft of tools from a rural building site in Greene County. At 4:08 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of Harding St in Churdan regarding several juvenile males involved in an altercation after school. At 6:44 pm a deputy checked a vehicle that had ran off the roadway and rolled onto its top at the intersection of 170th St and T Ave in Dawson Township. The driver reported that he was not injured and had left the scene. He indicated that the vehicle would be removed when conditions improved. At 10:46 pm a deputy provided a ride for the driver and passenger of a vehicle that had slid off the roadway near the Raccoon River bridge west of Jefferson on Highway 30. The vehicle was later removed by the owner.

Wednesday, Dec. 14: At 3:08 pm a deputy assisted with an unruly juvenile male at the Greene County High school. At 3:15 pm deputies assisted detectives from the Sheboygan, WI, police department with an investigation and interrogation of a male subject in the 300 block of Cartwright St in Rippey. At 8:29 pm a deputy was advised of a harassment concern in the 1000 block of Eagle St in Scranton.
Tuesday, Dec. 13: At 8:42 and 10:07 am Greene County dispatchers were advised of three dogs running at large in the 1100 block of Maple St in Scranton. Two of the dogs were subsequently captured by a city employee and a deputy transported them to the animal shelter in Jefferson.
Monday, Dec. 12: At 7:13 am a deputy was asked to speak to the owner of a dog in the 500 block of South 11th St in Grand Junction regarding the dog’s perceived aggressive actions. At 8:58 am a deputy was unable to locate a vehicle traveling west bound and entering Greene County on Highway 30 that was reported to be traveling in excess of 100 mph. At 9:25 am a deputy and the Grand Junction fire department were dispatched to the intersection of Highways 144 & 30 for a semi-tractor trailer that had a small fire on the trailer brakes after a hot wheel bearing ignited the grease. At 1:57 pm, a deputy was advised of debris on Highway 30 west of the Jefferson. The material was removed from the road.
Sunday, Dec. 11: At 2:32 am a JPD officer, while on another call, asked a deputy to check a vehicle parked in the 300 block of E. Lincoln Way with the driver reported to be passed out over the steering wheel. After the deputy’s arrival and investigation, the deputy subsequently arrested a juvenile male subject from rural Grand Junction for operating while intoxicated- first offense*. At 2:41 am a JPD officer assisted the deputy who was on the previous call with checking a residence in the 600 block of N 18th St in Grand Junction after the homeowner believed that an intruder was in her basement. The officer did not find anyone in the house. At 6:36 pm a deputy, the Jefferson fire department, Grand Junction fire units and Greene County EMS all responded to the 200 block of West St in Cooper for a reported structure fire. The homeowner reported that he was burning garbage earlier in the day and that embers from the fire may have ignited the small storage shed. Only minor damage to the garage next to the shed was reported. It is not known if any personal property was lost in the fire.
Saturday, Dec. 10: At 3:54 am a deputy assisted the Jefferson police department with trying to locate a male subject in the 400 block of N. Maple St that was reported of have assaulted a female earlier in the morning. At 10:21 am a deputy was dispatched to a single vehicle accident that occurred on Eaton Ave just north of the Raccoon River bridge in Kendrick Township. A 1999 Ford Ranger being driven by Kolten Tyler Showers, 16, of Scranton was reported to be southbound on Eaton when due to the slick road conditions, the vehicle slid into the ditch. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was eventually towed when road conditions became better. At 10:24 am a Carroll County deputy assisted with a reported two vehicle accident while the Greene County deputy was on the previous call. The accident occurred just into Greene County on Highway 30 near the intersection with 210th St in Kendrick Township. It was reported that an eastbound vehicle struck a westbound vehicle that was attempting to turn left onto 210th St. Drivers of the vehicles were Steven Lynn Gibson, 54, and Jamie Michael Pudenz, 22, both of Carroll. Both drivers reported no injuries but the vehicles were towed from the scene. At 11:21 am a deputy was dispatched for another single vehicle accident that occurred on Highway 30 near County Road P-14 (J Ave) west of Jefferson. The car which was being driven by Megan Jo Kirchgatter, 51, of Anthon, had slid into the ditch with no damage reported. At 4:14 pm a deputy assisted a DNR officer with investigating the report of a deer being taken illegally near Spring Lake Park. At 10:59 pm a deputy was advised of a gas drive-off from the Casey’s General store in Grand Junction. The vehicle and driver were identified and the deputy will be advising Story County as to the theft.
Friday, Dec. 9: At 10:24 am a deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of N. 18th St in Grand Junction to investigate criminal mischief and damage to the sheet rock on several walls in the basement of the residence. At 10:36 am a deputy was advised by an out of county resident of the possible theft of a cell phone that may have been taken from his work place in Greene County.
Thursday, Dec. 8: At 8:22 am the Jefferson, Rippey, Perry and Grand Junction fire departments, the Greene County sheriff’s office, Grand Junction rescue and Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to the two-story house fire at 2488 337th St in Washington Township. The fire took the life a juvenile male. The state fire marshal’s office is assisting in the investigation, but doesn’t believe foul play played a role in the fire.
Wednesday, Dec. 7: At 4:12 am, a JPD officer was dispatched to the Greene County Medical Center ER for the report of a 21-year-old male subject from Grand Junction accidentally discharging his hand gun and the round striking him in the upper left leg. He reported that he was cleaning his handgun when it accidentally discharged. He was later transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines to remove the bullet. At 8:19 am a deputy was unable to locate an eastbound semi-tractor trailer that had filled with fuel at Sparky’s One Stop in Jefferson and driven away. Boone County was advised of the drive off. At 5:55 pm a deputy was dispatched for a minor car-deer accident on Highway 30 east of Jefferson near Orchard Ave.
Tuesday, Dec. 6: At 6:35 pm Greene County deputies were assisted by Carroll County deputies and the Glidden and Ralston fire departments in looking for a 32-year-old male subject who had walked away from a residence in the 100 block of 210th St in Kendrick Township in Greene County. He was later found safe at a building site in Carroll County.
Monday, Dec. 5: At 5:08 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1200 block of Highway 30 west of Jefferson for a single vehicle roll-over accident. A pickup being driven by Jeffery William Strabley, 21, of Grand Junction was westbound on Highway 30 when he encountered a slick area on the pavement causing his truck to slide into the ditch striking a driveway. The truck then became airborne and rolled several revolutions, landing on its side. Strabley sustained only minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to the Greene County Medical Center for medical assistance. The truck was reported to be a total loss with the deputy crediting the wearing of his seatbelt to him not being hurt more seriously. At 8 am a deputy issued a DNR salvage tag for a deer that had been struck and killed on Highway 4 near 330th St in Franklin Township. At 8:40 am a deputy was assisted by an Iowa State Patrol officer with an arrest warrant for a male subject living in the 800 block of Hill St in Churdan. The deputy and trooper subsequently took into custody John Husted Berg, 59, of Churdan on an outstanding Greene County warrant*. At 11:55 am a deputy is investigating a reported domestic assault that occurred in the 900 block of 110th St in Highland Township.
Sunday, Dec. 4: At 10:58 am a deputy was dispatched to the Grand Junction Laundry Mat to investigate criminal mischief to property behind the building.
Saturday, Dec. 3: At 11:01 am a deputy responded to a dog running at large in Scranton and subsequently issued a citation to the owner of the dog in the 1000 block of Irving St. At 11:54 am a deputy was advised of several dogs chasing and harassing bike riders on the bike trail south of Jefferson. The owner of the roving twosome was located and advised of the situation. At 4:28 pm a deputy was dispatched to locate a dog running at large in the 2000 block of Highway 4 (Neola Ave). The dog was found and transported to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 8:23 pm a deputy was advised by a Paton resident in the 500 block of S. Wise St that his dog was stolen from the residence. The dog was later found in the home.
Friday, Dec. 2: At 10:34 am a deputy was advised of a 500 pound black calf missing from a feed lot in the 1400 block 100th St in Paton Township. At 2:26 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 1000 block of East Main St in Grand Junction to investigate a reported domestic assault. The deputy subsequently arrested Alauna Nicole Sellers, 23, of Granger for domestic abuse assault causing injury or mental illness*. At 4:59 pm a deputy was unable to locate a dog reported to be running at large on County Road P-14 (J Ave) between 230th and 330th St.
Thursday, Dec. 1: At 3:05 pm, a deputy assisted Jefferson police officers with a verbal altercation at the Dairy Queen in Jefferson. The male subject was later taken into custody on outstanding warrants from Webster County. At 10:54 pm a deputy, while on patrol in Grand Junction, located a stolen vehicle that was taken several days earlier from a residence in Perry.
*In all cases when a defendant has been charged, this is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
