Rams continue great start on hoops season

The Greene County varsity boys basketball added another game to the win column Tuesday in Jefferson as the beat the Roland-Story Norsemen 71-47. The Rams are at 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.

Three-point shooting was important in the win. Sophomore Trey Hinote made seven of 11 3-point shots and senior Trey Tucker made four of seven. Senior Tommy Jacobsen added a long shot, too. The Rams were 12 of 26 from 3-point range and 14 of 27 from 2-point range for 48 percent shooting.

The Norsemen put up 25 3-point shots but only six scored. They were 11 of 24 from 2-point range for 35 percent shooting.  Both teams scored seven points in free throws; the were at the line for 10 shots and the Norsemen for 13.

The game started out rather slowly. It was tied at 9 but the Rams put up a deuce and a tres to take a five point lead at 14-9.

The Treys made six 3-point baskets in the second quarter and the team put up a total of 30 points to stretch the lead to 44-18 at the half. The Rams’ shooting was a little cooler in the third quarter but the Norsemen got no closer than 18 points. The quarter ended with the Rams up 55-34.

The Rams were ahead 71-45 with about 2:30 left to play in the fourth quarter when coach Chris Nelson sent the reserves in. Against the reserves R-S scored just two points and the final score was 71-47.

Hinote was the high scorer with 27 points, adding six of six free throw shooting to his seven 3-point shots. He missed five 2-point shots. Tucker scored 19 points. Tucker was whistled for his fourth foul with about a minute to play in the third quarter. He saw limited playing time in the fourth quarter and was scoreless for the second half.

Junior Wade Adcock scored 10 points,  sophomore Lance Hughes scored eight and Jacobsen scored seven.

Tucker led the Rams in rebounds with six, and Jacobsen and senior Chase Stoline had five each. Hughes led in assists with seven.

The loss puts Roland-Story at 2-2 overall and 1-2 overall.

Next up for the Rams is Thursday night non-conference ball in Gowrie against Southeast Valley, and then they’re home again to host Saydel Friday.
