Local competition for the annual Elks “Hoop Shoot,” the national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8 thru 13, will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Greene County middle school gym. Registration and practice begins at 9 am with competition beginning at 10 am.
Greene County, Paton-Churdan and Glidden-Ralston youngsters have been competing in their phys ed classes to send top shooters to the local competition. Those youngsters from other area schools who did not compete at school are welcome to participate. Every boy and girl must bring a copy of their birth certificate.
More than 3 million youngsters throughout the country entered last year’s competition. Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. Girls and 8-9 year old boys use the girls competition ball. Boys 10-13 use the boys competition ball. The boy and girl in each age group (8-9, 10-11, and 12-13) with the best scores advance to the district contest January 14 in Storm Lake.
Jefferson Elks lodge #2306 sponsors the Elks Hoop Shoot locally as one of its youth programs.
