Super heroes, minions, princesses and zombies enjoyed the Halloween Triple Crown in Jefferson last Thursday. Some astute adults even saw Audrey Hepburn as she “shopped” for the best Halloween treats.
More than 200 children attended the Jefferson park and recreation department’s party at the Greene County Community Center. According to JPRD director Vicky Lautner, that’s a record number of children in the more than two decades the party has been held. She thanked the Greene County High School Interact Club for providing invaluable help.
Donating candy and prizes were Bomgaars, Breadeaux Pizza, Bunkers Dunkers, Casey’s General Store, Deal’s Orchard, Fareway, Home State Bank, Hy-Vee, Jefferson Telecom, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank, Subway, Wells Fargo Bank, State Farm Insurance, MacDonald Insurance, McAtee Tire & Service Center, Absolute Therapeutic Massage, GreeneCountyNewsOnline, Meythaler Photography, A & W Family Restaurant, Sparetime Lanes, Greene County Farm Bureau, Kingsgate Insurance, Casa de Oro and the Jefferson Kiwanis Club.
Outside the Jefferson public library the farmer and his dog Bingo, aka Terry Clark and Karen Mallas, enticed children inside for a “live” and abbreviated version of “The Shoemaker and the Elves”. Retired radio personality Jerry Roberts was the narrator with the cast including Avery Bardole, Teresa Shahan, Laura Clark, Lorene Hemping, Shirley Stapleton, Mike Piepel, Sarah Borgeson and Laura Clark.
Other volunteers at the library were Rose Olhausen, Amanda Clark, Robert Hemping, Dave Bohnet, Cathy Kingery (as Mother Goose), Jane Martino, Tracie Bettey, Rachel Bettey and Wendy Smits. Staff members helping in addition to Terry Clark and Karen Mallas were Jane Millard, Tim Jones and Judy Mohler.
Hundreds of youngsters and their families enjoyed the pleasant weather as they trick-or-treated around the courthouse square in an event hosted by the Greene County Chamber of Commerce. Businesses from around the square and beyond, as well as organizations like Jefferson Matters: Main Street, Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity, and even the VFW also participated.
