The Washington Winners 4-H club held its meeting Sept 25 at the Rippey United Methodist Church with 18 members present. Officers were nominated and voted on for different positions within the club.
The club decided to meet Saturday, Oct. 1 at 8 am for the Rippey highway ditch clean-up. Members were reminded about different things going on within 4-H in Greene County. October 16 is Awards Day at Deal’s Orchard. Activities start at 3:30 pm, with the ceremony at 6pm. National 4-H Week is the week of Oct. 3. Be sure to wear your 4-H t-shirt, decorate a window and donate books and games to the Extension office. 4-H re-enrollment begins now and the due date is Nov. 15 to have your enrollment fees in by. Greene County Extension centennial celebration starts at Nov. 13 at 5 pm at Clover Hall. New member night is Nov. 18 at 6 pm.

Katrina’s Korner- I am so SUPER EXCITED to announce we will be having a Fall Festival and Cartober Fest 2016 on Oct. 29 from 2-5 pm with the Disney movie Hocus Pocus showing inside at 5:15 pm. There will be a car show (all cars, trucks, tractors & motorcycles are welcome), games, prizes, horseshoe and bean bag tournaments, live bands, crafts for the kids, caramel apples, BBQ cook-off, soup & chili cook off, bake sale, vendor tables and much more! The book discussion – Our first book was Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. Three of the six people thatsigned up enjoyed a great discussion on Oct. 7. With the Historical Society meeting the same day, others were wearing a different hat. The book for the next discussion will be announced soon.

News in and around Rippey:
Rippey baseball comes to Greene County Historical Society – Players, coaches and many others gathered for the Greene County Historical Society gathering on Friday at the Rippey United Methodist for the meeting and program about baseball in Rippey. Following a “ball park meal” of hot dogs, brats and hamburgers served by the Rippey United Methodist Church, Mary Weaver opened the program by leading those present in the National Anthem and a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” accompanied by Dick Bardole.
Mary also shared some of the early history, including the first team founded in 1888 was named “Hardscrabble”. The Rippey Merchants was one of the teams with others to follow including the Rippey Demons with Pat Daugherty as a coach. She also told of state tournament games played at the Rippey baseball field.
Dan Peters of West Branch and Lester Zanotti of Omaha, both former Rippey players, and Ron McNeil who grew up in Jamaica and later was principal and coach at East Greene, responded to Mary’s questions about their experiences with baseball in Rippey. Dan and Lester played together while in high school in the mid 1950s. Lester later played for the University of Iowa and also in the Army.
Many memories were shared by former players and others including Cindy Anderson Cole, daughter of Walt and Nadine Anderson. She talked about her memories of being at the ballpark with her dad and racing to retrieve foul balls.
John Munson brought a catcher’s mitt stuffed with horse hair that had belonged to his father Willis. Baseball uniforms and other items were also on display for viewing. Thanks to all who were part of the day. ~submitted by Nancy Hanaman
Myron and Maralynn Rinker were called to Iowa Methodist Hospital early Friday morning, Sept. 30, for the unexpected death of Myron’s sister Barbara Rinker Hagge, 74, a 1960 graduate of Grand Junction High School. The visitation was held Thursday evening at Peace Lutheran Church in Des Moines. The funeral was Friday, Oct. 7, at Peace Lutheran Church. Many friends and relatives honored her family by attending one or both services.
A later memorial service will be at their church in Parrish, FL, where Barbara and her husband Donald Hagge had a winter home and many friends.
Marilee Rinker White of Centennial, CO, spent Wednesday and Thursday night with her parents Myron and Maralynn Rinker. Thursday noon she took her parents out to lunch in Perry to celebrate her Dad’s 79th birthday which was that day. Later they had cake that Marilee had purchased Wednesday night. Eating at Myron’s favorite restaurant and homemade ice cream and having his daughter here made his birthday special despite the sadness of the day in the death of his sister and Marilee’s aunt.
Jean Borgeson returned home Monday, Oct. 10. from visiting her daughter and family, Linda and Blake Hampton, Sierra, Sophia and Jayden. The twins will soon be 3 years old, and an early birthday party was held on Sunday, Oct. 9. Grandma and Sierra made three Jell-O cakes shaped like hearts. They were topped with Cool Whip and lots of sprinkles. After blowing out the candles, eating the cakes, and playing with the party favors and stickers, it was time to say goodbye to Grandma, who was leaving the next morning before they were up. A couple of them wanted to fly in the airplane, too, until they were told their teachers would miss them. It was a busy week and Christmas is just around the corner!
