McFarland Clinic specialist offers new procedure for enlarged prostate

Condition impacts one in four men by age 55

AMES – McFarland Clinic urologist Dr. Damon Dyche has begun treating patients with a new innovative treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate. The new treatment called UroLift® System is designed to relieve symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate, while preserving sexual function.

Dr Dyche will present a community program about Urolift on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 5:30 pm at the Bessie Myers Auditorium at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Anyone interested in learning more is welcome to attend. Persons who want more information or to schedule a consultation with Dr Dyche can call 515-239-4490.

Delivered during a minimally invasive procedure, the UroLift permanent implants act like window curtain tie-backs to hold the lobes of an enlarged prostate open. Patients recover from the procedure quickly and return to their normal routines with minimal downtime.

“The UroLift System has an excellent safety profile and provides relief from BPH symptoms, improving overall quality of life for our patients,” said Dr Dyche. “It is completely reversible and keeps all options open– will not exclude any future therapy if necessary.”

Benign prostatic hyperplasia affects more than 37 million men in the United States alone. Twelve times more common than prostate cancer, BPH occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Approximately one in four men experience BPH-related symptoms by age 55, with 90 percent of men over 70 symptomatic.
