Part of Fall Fest on the courthouse square
The second Historical Plaque Walk will be held on Sunday, Sept. 18, at 2 pm at the Greene County Historical Museum. This walk is dubbed the Historical Plaque Nominee Walk because it will feature the seven nominees for plaques on the pillars around the downtown square. Last year’s walk featured the 10 historical figures and events of notoriety in Greene County now found on pillars.
An opportunity for nominations was available to the public through the end of June. Seven applications were received and will be portrayed during this year’s afternoon walk. Nominees include Judge Gates Albert, Victor Hugo Lovejoy, Beta Tau Delta, Milligan Brothers Lumber Grain & Coal, Yankee Robinson, Spring Lake and Azor Mills. Each nominee will be portrayed by area residents and dressed in period costume.
Jefferson Matters: Main Street received a Greene County Community Foundation grant for $1,600, the cost of one plaque. Following the Historical Plaque Nominee Walk, participants will be invited to return to the Greene County Historical Society for refreshments and to vote for the nominee that should be featured on the new plaque. One of the nominees, Milligan Brothers Lumber Grain & Coal, will be financed through John and Kathy Milligan of Jefferson.
The nominees and actors portraying them are as follows:
- Victor Hugo Lovejoy – Darren Jackson
- Spring Lake – Jean Van Gilder
- Milligan Brothers Lumber, Grain & Coal – Don Van Gilder
- Elma Gates Albert – Alan Robinson
- Azor Mills – Rob Hoyt
- Yankee Robinson – Andrew McGinn
- Beta Tau Delta – Cassie Dozier and Anita Van Horn
This event is co-sponsored by Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s promotion committee and the Greene County Historical Society. It will be a part of Fall Fest on the Square with activities throughout the afternoon.
