Carlson placed second in the rhubarb-strawberry category of the Machine Shed and Gold Medal Flour Pies competition judged Aug. 15 at the Iowa State Fair. Carlson won a professional teeth bleaching and a $150 cash award when she won first and second place overall in the Sink Your Teeth Into Something Savory with Sage competition judged Thursday, Aug. 18.

The Jefferson park and recreation department is introducing a new program designed for people who don’t really know what kind of workout suits them best, and for people who get bored easily.

The night sky will be the guest of honor at the annual Star Party Friday, Sept. 2, at Whiterock Conservancy in Coon Rapids. People of all ages are welcome. After a short astronomy talk at 7:30 pm, astronomers at the Star Party will invite all to take a look through their various telescopes at all the dark Iowa skies offer.

A “Community Conversations” fellowship and speaker series will begin this Thursday, Sept 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson with Jefferson fire chief Jack Williams as guest speaker. Williams will explain the equipment needs of the Jefferson fire department and ways members of the community can assist the department.

Fall is approaching which means the Friends of the Jefferson Public Library are once again preparing for their annual fall book sale on Sept. 17-24 at the Jefferson public library.

The Jamaica Lions Club will host its annual tractor ride Friday, Sept. 9, departing from the schoolhouse at 8 am. Riders should bring a lunch. Persons who want more information can call 641-429-3370.

The school year started with comfortable temperatures. High temperature for the week was 85 degrees, according to KCCI’s SchoolNet 8. Low temperature was 57 degrees. Jefferson received .15  inch of rain during the week that ended Aug. 26.
