Ram volleyball team splits HOIAC triangular to start season

The Greene County varsity volleyball team opened the 2016 season splitting a pair of Heart of Iowa matches in Saydel Aug. 30.

The Rams topped the host Saydel Eagles 25-22, 25-7, 25-6. Coach Donna Carhill has experienced players returning this season, with junior Megan Durbin and all other starters seniors.

Durbin was 14 of 17 serving with four aces and Emily Heupel was 12 of 13 with three aces. Nadia Fisher led the team in kills at seven, with Durbin adding six and Hannah Stein at five kills. Hannah Promes had 23 assists. Durbin and Stein had four digs each.

“We had to work out some nerves in the first game, but played well in the following two games to win the match,” Carhill said.

The Rams fell to the Gilbert Tigers 11-25, 21-25, 23-25.

Heupel was again 12 of 13 serving with three aces and Promes was 18 of 19 with three aces. Durbin had eight kills and Fisher had seven. Promes had 17 assists and 11 digs. Kenna Marquardt had 14 digs and Stein had five.

“I was very pleased with the competitive attitude of the team,” Carhill said. “We played aggressively both offensively and defensively against a quality team. We definitely have improvements to make to reduce errors, but it was a good start to our season.”
