Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Greene County sheriff’s office:
Wednesday, Aug. 31: At 12:47 pm a deputy was advised of a dog running at large near the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction. The dog was returned to its owner in the 600 block of N. 19th St. At 4:11 pm a deputy was advised of criminal mischief to several pasture gates in the 500 block of 150th St in Cedar Township. At 8:59 pm a deputy was unable to locate a reported suspicious male subject walking on Highway 144 just north of Grand Junction. At 10:23 pm a deputy was dispatched for a vehicle that was driven into the ditch on Highway 144 in Dana. The driver of the car then began to knock on a resident’s door for help. The driver was subsequently transported to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center for field sobriety testing by the deputy. The investigation is ongoing with charges pending upon the urine sample testing.Tuesday, Aug. 30: At 4:21 pm a deputy was advised of a harassment concern from a resident in the 700 block of School St in Churdan. At 2:49 pm a deputy and the Jefferson fire department responded for some type of unknown liquid spill on Orchard Ave. At 7:14 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 2200 block of 320th St in Washington Township to investigate the theft of antique vehicle parts.
Monday, Aug. 29: At 7:47 am a deputy was advised of a minor accident that involved two trucks sideswiping each other’s mirrors as they passed each other in opposite directions on the river bridge south of Hyde Park on N-65 in Kendrick Township. The northbound driver reported that neither driver stopped. At 11:31 am a deputy was dispatched to the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey for the driver of a vehicle who was acting suspiciously and was known not to have a valid driver’s license. At 5:47 pm a deputy spoke with a Grand Junction business owner about an out of state caller using a stolen credit card to purchase equipment from their business. At 8:14 pm a deputy checked a controlled burn that was not reported to Greene County dispatchers in the 1000 block of 230th St in Jackson Township.
Sunday, Aug. 28: At 8:51 pm two deputies, Churdan fire and rescue and Greene County Emergency Medical Services were all dispatched for a single vehicle roll-over accident that occurred in the 1300 block of 130th St in Highland Township. Casey Marie Richards, 16, of Churdan reported that she was westbound on 130th St when she lost control of her 2001 Ford Explorer on loose gravel and the vehicle entered the north ditch. A passenger in her vehicle was not injured but Richards was transported to the Greene County Medical Center by Greene County EMS for minor injuries. The Explorer was reported to be a total loss and Richards was issued a citation for failure to maintain control.
Saturday, Aug. 27: At 5:07 am a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of 3rd Street in Rippey for a female that was reported to be entering several homes without consent. The deputy located the female and subsequently arrested Melisa Marie Kroupa, 37, of Granger for interference with official acts (simple misdemeanor), burglary of a motor vehicle- third degree (aggravated misdemeanor) and attempted burglary- second degree (Class D felony)*. At 11:22 am a deputy was advised of the theft of a mail box from a rural residence in the 1600 block of 243rd St in Grant Township. At 3:23 pm a deputy investigated the illegal dumping of old furniture at the entrance to Seven Hills Park.
Friday, Aug. 26: At 5:59 am the Greene County sheriff’s office, Churdan fire and rescue and a Department of Transportation Enforcement officer all responded for an eastbound semi-tractor trailer that did not negotiate the curve on Highway 4 in Churdan and rolled onto its side in the lawn of 1001 Fitzpatrick St. The driver of the semi, David Bieret, 27, of Wall Lake was traveling southbound on Highway 4 from Nemaha with a trailer load of butcher hogs destined for Perry when the load shifted as he entered the curve onto 140th St. Two members of the Churdan fire and rescue squad used their K12 rescue saw to cut open the aluminum trailer to extricate the live hogs. Bieret was not injured but was issued a citation for failure to maintain control. Nineteen of the 150 hogs on the trailer were either killed due to the impact or were destroyed upon removal. Damage to the 2015 Peterbuilt semi-tractor and 2015 Wilson trailer was estimated to be $100,000. The truck is owned by Scharn Trucking of Nemaha. At 8:47 am a deputy was dispatched to Railroad and 20th St in Grand Junction to investigate the theft of personal property from the building site. Most of the property was later located, with charges pending on a male subject living near the location of the theft. At 3:15 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of 160th St to investigate the disappearance of a 2011 John Deere Gator. At 3:24 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1400 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Jackson Township for a reported suspicious male subject trying to enter a home. The described vehicle was not located at that time. At 8:31 pm a deputy was unable to locate two described pickups that were reported to be drag racing on Percival St in Grand Junction. At 8:56 pm two deputies responded to determine the driver of a suspicious vehicle parked at the intersection of 1st and Percival Streets in Rippey. The deputies located and subsequently arrested the driver of the truck, Alan Randolf Haywood, 32, of Perry for driving while suspended and trespassing on private property*.

Wednesday, Aug. 24: At 10:30 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1100 block of Orchard Ave in Hardin Township to capture several dogs running at large and transported them to the animal shelter in Jefferson. At 11:27 am a deputy assisted a JPD officer with a call in the 300 block of N. Elm St in Jefferson.
Tuesday, Aug. 23: At 6:44 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1700 block of County Road P-30 (Quaker Ave) in Grant Township for a reported car-deer accident. A vehicle being driven by Travis Christopher Fincel, 41, of Grand Junction was northbound when a deer ran onto the roadway and was struck. Fincel was not injured but his 2006 Chevrolet Suburban sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage. At 11:11 am a deputy assisted the driver of a straight truck that became disabled on Highway 144 north of 120th St in Paton Township. The deputy provided traffic control until the truck could be removed from the traveled portion of the roadway. At 4:03 pm a deputy was dispatched to 209 Main in Paton for a male subject who wanted to voluntarily turn himself in on multiple outstanding warrants from other counties. At 5:51 pm a deputy located two male subjects who were skateboarding and impeding traffic on Highway 4 on the hill near the Jefferson Community Golf Course. The two young men were advised that skateboarding on a major highway was not one of their better ideas.
Monday, Aug. 22: At 6:48 am a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton to investigate the theft of a purse from a parked vehicle. At 10:02 am deputies assisted JPD officers with a call in the 1400 block of Southfield Drive in Jefferson. At 12:31 pm, an officer from the Carroll police department requested a deputy and a JPD officer try and locate a Greene County resident in Jefferson for whom there is an outstanding warrant in Carroll County. At 7:25 pm a deputy investigated a 4-wheel ATV accident that injured a juvenile male after the ATV rolled on its side, injuring the boy. The boy and his father, who was driving the ATV at the time, were checking or repairing cattle fence in the 700 block of 202nd St in Bristol Township. The boy was transported by his father and grandfather to the Greene County Medical Center ER and was later transported to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines by helicopter. The youth was responsive and talking with medical personnel at the hospital.
Sunday, Aug. 21: At 11:16 am a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of S. Wise St in Paton for a dog reported to be running at large. The dog was not located upon the deputy’s arrival. At 2:30 pm a Grand Junction resident came to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center to express his concern over threats being made against him and another male subject in Grand Junction. At 7:31 pm a deputy checked an abandoned vehicle with a flat tire parked off the roadway on Highway 144 near 270th St in Junction Township. At 8:17 pm a deputy returned to the 500 block of Jay St in Churdan to pick up the black and white pitbull dog that was finally captured by a resident at that location. At 9:40 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1500 block of Meadow Lane to investigate the report of a black Chevrolet pickup trespassing and causing criminal mischief to the property.
Saturday, Aug. 20: At 9:25 am a deputy was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store in Grand Junction to investigate the theft of personal property from a vehicle. At 5:12 pm a deputy was dispatched to Churdan for a dog running at large. At 6:19 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1000 block of Head Street in Churdan for a dog running at large. The deputy did locate the described black and white dog but was not able to capture the dog at that time. At 11:31 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of E. Main Street in Grand Junction for a reported suspicious male subject trespassing on private property. The described male was not located at that time.
Friday, Aug. 19: At 9:50 am the chief deputy sheriff initiated a drug investigation in Grand Junction. At 9:54 am Greene County sheriff’s deputies assisted the JPD with several calls to a residence in the 1400 block of Southfield Drive in Jefferson. At 5:40 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 800 block of Highway 144 (U Ave) south of Dana to investigate an abandoned pickup truck parked in a farm field drive. At 7:11 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 500 block of Jay St in Churdan for a dog running at large. The described black and white pitbull type dog was not located by the deputy at that time. At 7:30 pm a deputy assisted a probation officer with the arrest of Christopher Hollis Christian, 35, of Grand Junction on an outstanding warrant from Boone County. The deputy transported Christian to the Boone-Greene County line where a Boone County deputy took custody of Christian. At 11:03 pm a deputy was dispatched for a reported single vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of County Road E-53 (235th St) and Quint Ave in Grant Township. Zoe Catherine Joy, 16, of Jefferson reported that she lost control of her vehicle due to wet loose gravel. The truck then rolled into the north ditch, coming to rest onto its wheels. Joy was wearing her seat belt at the time. No damage estimate was reported for her 1994 Mazda pickup truck. Although Joy reported to the deputy that she did not need medical attention, the deputy transported her to the Greene County Medical Center ER for a precautionary medical evaluation.
Thursday, Aug. 18: At 2:29 pm two deputies and a JPD officer located a runaway juvenile from Grand Junction near the Dollar General Store in Jefferson. The male was taken into protective custody. At 4:07 pm a deputy was advised by the Boone County sheriff’s office of a motorcycle that was traveling at a high rate of speed entering Greene County on Highway 30. The motorcycle and the rider were identified but not located at that time. At 7:28 pm a deputy was advised of a trespassing concern by a resident in the 700 block of Church St in Churdan. At 9:34 pm a deputy contacted the Scranton fire department to assist a resident in the 600 block of Grant St in Scranton with retrieving her cat from a tree after the feline was stranded there for several days.
Wednesday, Aug. 17: At 3:43 pm two deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of County Road P-14 (J Ave) in Bristol Township for a vehicle that was located on private property. The deputies determined that the vehicle was the Jeep Patriot that had been reported stolen in the early morning of Aug. 7. At 6:38 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 500 block of Jay St in Churdan about a trespassing concern.
Tuesday, Aug. 16: At 12:17 am a deputy assisted Carroll County authorities with helping transport a Greene County resident back to Churdan after his ride was arrested in Carroll County. At 10:42 am, a deputy was dispatched to the 600 block of N. 16th St in Grand Junction to investigate the possible theft of a public utility. At 12:06 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of E. Main St in Grand Junction for a trespassing concern. At 9:02 pm a deputy was dispatched to the area of 16th and Railroad Streets in Grand Junction for a reported fight or verbal altercation between several adults.
Monday, Aug. 15: At 2:13 pm a JPD officer assisted Greene County deputies and Greene County Emergency Medical Services with a single vehicle accident that occurred in the driveway of 1431 Jordan Ave in Jackson Township. Baylee Jennelle Eider, 16, of Jefferson was westbound on Jordan Ave when she lost control of her 2005 Honda Accord. Her car entered the north ditch and rolled onto its top, coming to rest on a large square steel post at the driveway entrance. Eider and two other juvenile passengers in her vehicle were evaluated at the scene by Greene County EMS with only minor injuries. The vehicle was estimated to be a total loss. Injuries to the youth were minimized due to seat belt usage and air bag deployment.
Sunday, Aug. 14: 1:22 am, a deputy was advised by the Perry PD of their being involved in a motorcycle high speed chase west of Perry on Highway 141. The motorcycle was not found in Greene County. At 4:43 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 2400 block of K Ave in Greenbrier Township to investigate the report of a 4 wheel ATV trespassing on private property. At 5:25 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 900 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction for a minor hit and run accident. At 6:17 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office, Jefferson fire department and several units from the Greene County Emergency Medical Services responded to a two vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of County Road E-53 (240th St) and H Ave. Patrick Lee Rumley, 56, of rural Scranton was westbound on E-53 in his 2014 Ford F150 pulling a small utility trailer when he slowed and signaled to make a left turn on to H Ave. William Anthony Gifford, 33, of Scranton also westbound on E-53, attempted to pass several vehicles on the left and struck the Rumley pickup on the driver’s side, causing the Rumley pickup to roll onto its side.
Gifford’s 2001 Honda Accord came to rest on its wheels in the southwest ditch at the intersection. Gifford, Rumley, and a passenger in his pickup were all transported to the Greene County Medical Center for observation. Gifford was later air lifted to Des Moines. The air bags did deploy in all vehicles. Charges are pending further investigation. At 7:09 pm a deputy was advised by a juvenile male subject of a possible assault in Scranton. At 7:45 pm a deputy investigated a harassment concern in the 800 block of Percival St in Grand Junction.
Saturday, Aug. 13: At 7:51 am a deputy was dispatched to the 1000 block of Irving Street in Scranton to investigate the reported theft of money. At 10:54 am four members of the Greene County sheriff’s office and a JPD officer executed a search warrant at 405 N. 16th St in Grand Junction and subsequently arrested Brenda Jean Kennedy, 44, of Grand Junction for a controlled substance violation involving the distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and two counts of unlawful possession of prescription drugs*. At 7:50 pm, a deputy was dispatched to the 1100 block of State St in Scranton to investigate criminal mischief and vandalism to a vehicle.
Friday, Aug. 12: At 12:06 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Paton city park to investigate criminal mischief to park equipment. At 4:28 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of Main St in Paton to investigate the theft of personal property from a vehicle.
Thursday, Aug. 11: At 1:16 pm a deputy was asked by a Cedar Rapids police officer to check for a vehicle in Rippey that may have been involved in a hit and run accident in Cedar Rapids. At 9:28 pm a deputy advised of an alarm activation at the Greene County Intermediate School in Grand Junction. The alarm was set off due to leaking water and not an entry into the building. At 9:30 pm four members of the Greene County sheriff’s office and an Iowa State Patrol officer were dispatched to the 700 block of Main St in Scranton to investigate the report of harassment and to help mediate a verbal altercation.
Wednesday, Aug. 10: At 9:20 am a deputy was advised of the theft of fishing equipment from a parked vehicle near the Squirrel Hollow boat ramp. A description of the suspected vehicle and driver were provided to the deputy. At 3 pm a deputy was advised by a Grand Junction resident of a possible theft of personal property. At 9:34 pm the Greene County sheriff’s office, Churdan fire and an Iowa State Patrol officer searched for a runaway 14-year-old that walked away from his home in Churdan. The search was discontinued after several hours of searching the town.
Tuesday, Aug. 9: At 12:13 am a deputy was advised of the theft of personal property from the yard of a residence in the 300 block of 13th Street S. in Grand Junction. At 10:27 am a deputy was advised of criminal mischief to the parking area at the city hall in Scranton. At 9:39 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 200 block of Anyer St in Dana about a harassment concern.
Monday, Aug. 8: At 4:02 am a deputy was dispatched to the 700 block of Eagle St in Scranton to investigate a reported assault. At 4:15 am a deputy was advised by the Webster County sheriff’s office of a single vehicle fatality accident that occurred in Webster County. At 4:34 pm a deputy spoke with a Churdan resident about a harassment concern. At 5:54 pm a deputy assisted Jefferson Police Officers with trying to locate a small child that was reported to be walking close the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The described youth was not located at that time. At 8:54 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 300 block of State St in Scranton to investigate a suspicious vehicle driving around the town. The described pickup was not located upon the deputy’s arrival.
Sunday, Aug. 7: At 2:16 am, a deputy was advised of a vehicle that was taken without the owners consent in the 900 block of 222nd St in Jackson Township. The vehicle was later entered as stolen. At 8:43 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 800 block of North St in Churdan for the report of several children playing dangerously close to Highway 4. The parents of the youth were spoken to by the deputy.
Saturday, Aug. 6: At 12:17 am a deputy was dispatched to the 100 block of E. Hager St in Grand Junction to investigate the report of a suspicious person in the alley behind the Laundromat. No one was found in the area upon the deputy’s arrival.
Friday, Aug. 5: At 6:45 am a deputy was dispatched for the report of an abandoned vehicle off the roadway and in a field on Highway 25 near 250th St south of Scranton. The car was towed from the scene and the owner was informed of its location. At 11:31 am a deputy was dispatched to the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey to investigate counterfeit currency being passed to them. At 1:03 pm a deputy investigated a minor backing accident in the Casey’s General Store parking lot in Scranton.
Thursday, Aug. 4: At 7:39 am a deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for improper plates and subsequently arrested Troy Angelo MCGee, 47, of Fort Dodge on an outstanding warrant from Webster County. At 10:55 am a deputy and the Jefferson fire department assisted the driver of a semi tractor-trailer that was experiencing mechanical issues at the intersection of Highways 30 and 4. The truck was loaded with live hogs that were becoming stressed due to the extreme heat and humidity. The Jefferson fire department provided a cool wet down until the truck was operational. At 2:49 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of S. 19th St in Grand Junction to investigate criminal mischief to the rear window of a vehicle.
Wednesday, Aug. 3: At 12:11 pm a deputy was advised of the theft of restaurant equipment from a rental property in Churdan. At 1:13 pm a deputy was dispatched to the Sparky’s One Stop in Rippey for a harassment concern. Several Rippey residents were advised that if they re-enter the store they will be charged with trespassing. At 1:31 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 2300 block of 185th St in Junction Township about receiving a phone scam. At 4:15 pm a deputy spoke with a resident in the 1600 block of I Ave in Jackson Township about a phone scam that he received. At 4:32 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of State St in Scranton to investigate criminal mischief to a door. At 11 pm a deputy was asked to investigate the unauthorized use of a debit card for a Greene County resident.
Tuesday, Aug. 2: At 1:38 pm the Dallas County sheriff’s office asked a deputy to check the welfare of a female subject that lives in the 200 block of Lovejoy St in Rippey after her vehicle was found abandoned in Dallas County. At 2:40 pm a deputy was advised of an erratic and careless driver westbound from Grand Junction on Highway 30. The deputy located and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle after the driver was locked on radar at 82 in a 55 zone. At 9:16 pm a deputy assisted with traffic control for a disabled truck and trailer on Highway 30 near Pioneer Avenue.
Monday, Aug. 1: At 1:53 am a deputy was dispatched to the 200 block of Adaza St in Highland Township to investigate the report of two suspicious persons trying to enter a home. The identity of the two was determined and the deputy spoke spoke wiTh both individuals. At 8:04 am the chief deputy assisted the Jefferson police department and the Jefferson fire department with locating a female who had walked away from the Harrison House in Jefferson. At 10:28 am the chief deputy was asked to assist in the jail after an inmate became unruly and destroyed. At 8:10 pm a deputy spoke with a jail inmate about his belligerent attitude and actions toward a female jailer. At 9:21 pm a deputy was dispatched to the 1500 block of Meadow Ave in Jackson Township to investigate a trespassing concern. At 9:45 pm a deputy was able to locate a Toyota Camry in Jefferson that was taken without the owner’s consent from Webster City.
