Not just for “farm kids”
Greene County FFA invites potential members and their families to the first meeting of the year. The meeting, slated for Tuesday, Aug. 30, will begin at 6 pm with a light supper in the school cafeteria.
At the meeting, officers and FFA advisor Katie Akers will discuss what is planned this year, collect dues, and take orders for T-shirts and apparel.
FFA is open to all students, not just those who live on farms, Akers said. The only requirement is that members participate in the annual fall fundraiser sale and take at least one ag class during the school year. The aquaculture, agronomy, animal science, conservation/natural resource and horticulture classes all earn science credits toward graduation.
Plans for the 2016-17 school year include hosting a petting zoo at Deal’s Orchard; attending sub-district, district, state and national conventions; attending a Des Moines legislative symposium, a renewable energy conference and a student leadership conference; and participating in a soil judging competition. In addition to the fall fundraiser, FFA members run the annual spring plant sale held at the schools greenhouse.
