Organizers of Lincoln Highway Day in Grand Junction Saturday were excited by the number of people who participated in the varied events and the financial support they gave the “Keep Our Pool Afloat” fund.
Many of the activities, including a silent auction, two meals and a 5K Glow Run were fundraisers to meet the $130,000 goal needed to repair the city pool. The pool is closed for the summer, but city officials and volunteers are hopeful and confident they can raise the money needed to have the pool repaired for the 2017 season.
Bingo proved to be a multi-generational game that lasted longer than planned because it was so much fun. Joanne Rowles and Curtis Woltz were bingo bosses.
This was the first Lincoln Highway Day for the new community center, and many activities were held in air conditioned comfort. The Off the Track Players’ production of “Frumpled Fairy Tales” by Bill Springer (published by Eldridge Publishing Co) put a humorous twist on three classic tales – Rumplestiltskin, Rapunzel and Red Riding Hood. The comedy was directed by Darren Jackson.
For the younger crew, though, there was no better way to cool down than water fights hosted by the Grand Junction fire department.
The Lincoln Highway Day parade included 19 entries, with many of them throwing generous hands-full of candy. A couple had frozen treats, which were much appreciated since the temperature at parade time was 95 degrees.
