Muir family reunion celebrates July 4: Family and friends gathered at the rural Washington Township home of Eugene and Iva Jo Muir on Monday, July 4.

Eugene Muir pinThe highlight of the morning was a ceremony conducted by four staff members of Hospice of Central Iowa Care as well as veteran partner Wes and his wife Marilyn Bode. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer of thanks was given and several patriotic readings were done. Eugene was given a Veteran Service Flag pin by veteran partner Bode and the group sang “God Bless America.” Concluding the program, Bode presented Eugene with a certificate of recognition and thanked him for his service.

A life-long resident of rural Washington Township and Rippey graduate of 1951, Eugene married Iva Jo Dagit Oct. 11, 1952. Eugene entered the service in March of 1953 and was honorably discharged in March of 1955, earning the rank of corporal. They continued their farming operation and raised their three children, Steve, Cheri, and Curt.

Eugene and Iva Jo were blessed to have their children, Steve and Trudy Muir of Wayne, NE, Cheri Kersey of Grand Junction, and and Curt and Kelley Muir of Rippey, and several of their grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the ceremony. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren attending included Travis Kersey and fiancé Laura Tronchetti  of Clive, Rachel, and Adam Vogel and their children Kori and Jaxon of Panora, and  C. J. and Kayla Muir of Rippey.

Eugene Muir groupBrothers and sisters-in law Lloyd and Gloria Dagit of Jefferson and  Ray and Charlotte Dagit of Paton, as well as nieces Shelley Naeve of Fort Dodge, and Teresa Lansman and children, Christopher and Savannah, of Grand Junction, rounded out the family members who were able to share their day with them.

Friends of the family Dennis and Carla Smith of Minburn, Steve and Diana Vogel of Yale, LaVere and Beverly Derry of Rippey and their daughter Terri of Ames, as well as Jean Borgeson of Rippey were also part of the group.

After the services, two long tables were suddenly filled with lots of food!  The group ate well, visited, and parted with a good feeling about what Hospice of Central Iowa had provided to make the day so special.

Rippey community picnicRippey Lions Club community picnic well attended: More than 40 folks gathered at the, second annual Rippey Lions Club community picnic at Osborn Park Saturday, July 9. News in and around Rippey

Florida trip:  Connie Neese was invited by David, Barbara, Bailey, Riley, Delaney and Keagan Ovenshire to join them for a family trip to the Miami, FL, area to attend an international soccer tournament held the first week in July. Delaney and Keagan, twin daughters of David and Barbara, were participants in the tournament.

Grandma accepted their invitation but chose to fly and meet them in Florida as they were driving from Cedar Rapids. Flying on a holiday can be less crowded. Arriving in Fort Lauderdale it was only a short distance from the condo they had rented for the week. Getting to the soccer field was another story; the traffic was terrible!

The tournament was well organized and the weather was hot. The family was able to get to the beach several times. Many beach areas are private and some had meters for minutes spent there. Many beautiful homes and high rise apartments take up most of the area.

Very early Saturday morning, July 9, it was back to the airport for a flight to Houston, the airline “hub” and it was huge, but the flight back to Des Moines was smooth.

Roy and Phyllis Bardole were the taxi service to and from the airport and very much appreciated.
