The Greene County softball team followed up a five-game winning streak last week with a four-game skid. The Rams’ lone victory was over Roland-Story. They lost to North Polk, Perry, Saydel and defending state champ Solon. The Rams fell to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in Heart of Iowa Conference action as of June 10.
As of June 10 Saydel led the league with a 6-0 record, followed by Collins-Maxwell-Baxter 6-1; North Polk 4-2; South Hamilton 4-3; Greene County 4-4; PCM 3-5; Roland-Story 2-6; Gilbert 1-5; Nevada 1-6.
North Polk 17 ~ GC 8
A host of errors led to a loss on the Greene County softball field Monday, June 6. North Polk was up 6-5 after five innings. Then the Rams fell apart, allowing 10 runs in the sixth. Collecting themselves, GC scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but one run apiece in the seventh gave the victory to the Comets 17-8.
Junior Hannah Promes threw the first 5-2/3 innings and took the loss with relief on the mound from Samantha Hardaway. Together they gave up 17 hits for 17 runs, six of which were earned. They walked four and struck out three.
The Rams stroked 16 hits on the night, but nine errors gave the game to North Polk.
Carleigh Paup had the only extra base hits for the Rams, hammering a triple and two doubles along with a single to drive in two runs. Megan Carey’s three base hits plated two runs. Promes was four-for-four in the batter’s box while Megan Durbin and Sydney Koch each hit an RBI single.
Perry 9 ~ GC 0
Perry stunned the Greene County softball team Tuesday (June 7) in Perry, beating the Rams 9-0 in a no-hitter pitched by Bluejays Emma Olejniczak and Sidney Vancil. GC had base runners but could not get them around to home plate. The Rams struck out 13 times.
Perry scored twice in the first, three times in the third, once in the fifth, and three more in the sixth.
Sophomore Samantha Hardaway pitched the loss, allowing nine runs on 10 hits, walking four and striking out three.
Saydel 6 ~ GC 3
The Rams lost their third game in three nights, falling 6-3 to Saydel in Jefferson Wednesday (June 8).
Saydel scored three times in the first inning and tacked on single runs in the third, fourth and sixth. Greene County scored in innings one, three and seven, falling 6-3.
The Eagles collected 11 hits off pitcher Promes. She threw three walks and one strikeout.
The Rams tallied five hits as Hardaway went three for three with two doubles and a single, and Carey tripled and singled. Promes drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.
Solon 11 ~ GC 4
Things didn’t get any easier for the Rams softball team as defending Class 3A State champion Solon made the long trip to Jefferson on Thursday, defeating GC 11-4. The Spartans are ranked third in 3A but the Rams gave them a run for the money. This was the fourth consecutive loss for the Rams.
With the game tied 4-4 going into the seventh inning, Solon put together a seven-run seventh with the Rams helping out with two errors.
Promes took the pitching loss, allowing eight earned runs on 14 hits. She struck out two batters.
Sydney Koch led the offense with a double and two singles, driving in three runs. Carey added three base hits and Paup had two. Eighth grader Izzy Bravard added a run-scoring double.
GC 4 ~ Roland-Story 1
The Greene County softball team ended a four-game skid with a 4-1 victory over Roland-Story in Jefferson Friday (June 10).
The Rams drove in two runs in the first inning while Roland-Story’s only run came in the fourth. The Rams added a run in the fifth and sixth for the 4-1 victory.
Promes was stellar on the mound as she threw the ball well over seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. She struck out two batters.
Seniors Paup and Koch each cracked a triple, Koch’s going for an RBI. Promes added a two-run single and Megan Durbin fired a double and a base hit.
