Ava Schilling, 10, and David Petersen, 18, were winners in the local Bill Riley Talent Search competition held during FIFTY Fest last Saturday. They are now eligible to compete at the State Fair in August.
Schilling won the Sprout division at the 2014 Iowa State Fair with her rendition of “You Can’t Get a Man With a Gun” from “Annie Get Your Gun.” This year she is singing “Popular” from “Wicked.”
Petersen will perform “I Am Adolpho” from the musical “The Drowsy Chaperone.” He first prepared the piece for the solo musical theatre category in high school speech competition and earned All-State honors with it.
Other winners in the Sprout division were dancer Taryn Schuning, 10, of Portsmouth in second place and dancer Eliot Schilling, 12, of Jefferson in third place.
In the Senior division vocalist Danielle Johnson, 18, of Jefferson placed second and trumpet player Brittany Linch, 14, of Creston placed third.
Judges were Jessica Chapman and Sheilah Pound, both of Jefferson, and Sarah Kunz of Webster City. Emcee was Anna Pound.
