Pictured are members of Kinkead-Martin American Legion Post #583, Rippey, taken at Old Rippey Cemetery after being at the Fairview United Methodist Church services and the Bowers/Angus Cemetery and before concluding their day at the Rippey Cemetery. Sunday, after the Pleasant Hill church services, some of these gentlemen performed their 21 gun salute in front of the church.
Pictured (from left) are Ben Vannatta, Dennis Ulrich, Chris Kilmer, Bill Hamilton, Mike Scharingson, Dale White, Dan Brubaker and Gary Schmidt.
At the Rippey Cemetery, Mary Weaver, program leader, thanked the legion members and the other volunteers who helped make this day go smoothly. She thanked Dan Brubaker and his volunteers for putting the flags up in the cemetery, and the sextons Roger Norgren, for Rippey Cemetery, and Dick Bardole for Bowers/Angus and Old Rippey Cemeteries. The Washington Township trustees, Mary Hick, Roger Norgren, and Tod Contner, are in charge of the three cemeteries in the township. Jean Borgeson is the township clerk.
A special thanks was given to LaVere Derry, who was unable to be part of this year’s veteran’s salute for the first time in 60 years.
The Rev. Paul Burrow gave the message and Jean Borgeson read “In Flanders Field” during the program. Everyone was invited to the Rippey Methodist Church for lunch and visiting. That committee said they served approximately 90 people.
Rippey alumni party held May 28: The annual Rippey alumni party was held Saturday, May 28. After the delicious meal cooked by Kevin Hick and served by his great helpers Mary Ann Hick, Dick and Jo Bardole, Connie Neese, and Myron and Maralynn Rinker, the group went to the sanctuary for a meeting and entertainment.
Verdina Hastings, president of the Alumni Association, led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and one verse of “America.” She thanked the Hicks and the rest for the meal. Also thanks were given to Maralynn Rinker for decorating the tables, Rick and Mary Liebich, for setting up and taking down the tables, and Jean Borgeson for helping with the addresses and labels for the letters that were sent to the alumni.
The Praise Power Trio, consisting of Brenda Roberts, Mary Ann Bardole, and Meladee Graven, sang a couple medley arrangements of the ‘50s and ‘60s, “Bobby Socks Rock” and “60’s Party Line,” closing with the song, “When Will I See You Again.” Dick Bardole accompanied the trio on the piano.
Mary Ann Miller read the class sign in sheets and filled in those who forgot to sign in. There were 38 alumni in attendance. (Ernie Clapp was signed in with the class of 1957, which would have made 39, but as the natives know, Ernie was born in 1879, and as a young man, emigrated to Canada and then to Rippey from England in 1905, so that was good for a chuckle.) There were 19 guests attending this year.
She also read the names of the 15 alumni who have passed away since last year’s gathering.
Mary Dugan of Des Moines was recognized as the oldest class represented, which was 1934. Eleanor Lofstedt Whiton, was next oldest being from the class of 1938.
Keith Devilbiss thanked everyone for the support he received while building the monument to the school. He thanked his brother Norman, son Mark and Mark’s employee for the flurry of work in the last couple weeks. Also, he noted and thanked the Washington Winners 4-H Club for helping clean the bricks at the beginning of the project, as well as other volunteers who quietly helped in other ways. It was emphasized that bricks for engraving can still be ordered and easily set in the patio at any time. He considered it an honor to have been able to create the monument.
The classes of 1940 and 1946 were recognized for their 70th and 60th year of graduation. Janice Burke Squires gave the response from the 1946 class.
Several letters from other alumni were available to read from those unable to attend. One in particular, from Jeffry Jontz, who lives in Florida and graduated from the last class in 1962, concluded his remarks by saying, “I’ve always been proud of the strong foundation that we got growing up in a small town in Iowa in the 1950s and 1960s.” This seems to be the common thread every year as the graduates gather to reminisce.
Keith Devilbiss and Mary Fry Liebich will preside over next year’s meeting.

Memorial bricks update: After seeing the Rippey school memorial built by mason Keith Devilbiss, six individuals have decided they want to purchase a Rippey school memorial brick. Eight bricks have recently been ordered since the Memorial Day/Rippey alumni banquet time, but a minimum of 10 is needed to place an order with the Florida company.
The bricks cost $50 each and the forms may be found on Remember the Rippey School as posted by Marc Monthei. For local Greene County area people the forms will also be available at the Rippey Library, the Methodist Church, or the two banks in Rippey.
Mary Weaver would like to place the order by July 1, so that delivery will be done by mid-August. This will allow Keith plenty of time to get them in place prior to cold weather.
It is not a requirement that you graduated from the Rippey School. Several people have ordered bricks who attended East Greene grade school in the building, or may wish to honor teachers or others who were significant in their lives.
Please get your order placed by July 1. mweaver235@gmail.com or 515-360-8046.
