The Grand Junction municipal pool has not yet opened and its future will be a topic of discussion when the city council meets next Tuesday, June 13.
The city staff had determined that the pool needs an estimated $100,000 in repairs and upgrades but the city planned to have the pool open June 6.
More problems were found, and at an emergency city council meeting June 1 the council decided not to open the pool until funds have been raised and repairs have been completed.
The last major renovation to the aging pool was in 1983, with an update in 2006.
The mayor has promised an “in depth” discussion at the June 13 meeting, with information about the condition and needed repairs, and the pool’s impact on the city budget. “The mayor and council are committed to making the pool safe, efficient and healthy for the community…. This decision was not made lightly,” according to the city’s Facebook page.
Several fundraisers for the pool are already being planned. City clerk Katherine Thomas said it is very feasible that the needed money can be raised in time for repairs to be done next spring.
The city council’s regular meeting will be next Monday, June 13, at 7 pm at the Community Center. Time will be provided for public questions and comments about the pool.
