The Greene County 4-H and FFA sheep and goat weigh-in is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, from 8 to 10:30 am at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Jefferson.
All market lambs and goats to be exhibited at the 2016 Greene County Fair are required to be weighed and tagged during this time, with complete identification forms turned in.
Youth who plan to weigh in animals for Ak-Sar-Ben need to contact the Extension office ahead of time with plans on how many head they will nominate. Ak-Sar-Ben materials will only be ordered for families that contact the Extension office ahead of time. Additionally, all Market Lamb Community Barn Program members need to be present at the weigh-in.
Each youngster is allowed to weigh and identify (tag) up to 10 market lambs for the County Fair. The Greene County Lamb Producers are covering the cost of the sheep ear tags again this year. Goat exhibitors will pay the $1.50 cost for each ear tag. If families plan to nominate animals for the Iowa State Fair or for Ak-Sar-Ben they will need to plan to pay extra.
After weigh-in, 4-H members need to verify their county weigh-in information on their family 4-HOnline account at www.4honline.com. A help sheet is available for families to assist with this verification process. All information needs to be verified by May 16, or the information stands as entered. For more information about the sheep and goat weigh-in, contact Kayla Hyett, county youth and 4-H coordinator, at the Greene County Extension office by phone at 515-386-2138 or by email at khyett@iastate.edu.
