The American Cancer Society encourages all Relays for Life to include an educational component that will in some way work to eliminate cancer.
The steering committee of the Greene County Relay for Life has in past years invited a guest “Fight Back” speaker for the Relay, or hosted “Fight Back” speakers at different venues.
This year, the steering committee has organized an informal speakers’ bureau, a group of knowledgeable cancer survivors who are available to speak with organizations or social groups around the county.
“Our hope is that the organizations whose meetings regularly include some sort of program will invite someone from our speakers’ bureau to come tell their story. Their stories are stories of hope, but they include the importance of early diagnosis. That’s an important key to fighting cancer, and we want our Greene County community to join in that fight,” said steering committee member Tori Riley.
Sharon Stalder, Thelma Hedges, Doug Rieder, Rick Morain and Jane Finch comprise the 2016 speakers’ bureau. They can be contacted directly to schedule a program, or call Riley at 515-370-3087 to facilitate a contact.
The 20th annual Relay for Life of Greene County will be held Saturday, April 23, from 9:30 am to 2 pm at the Greene County Community Center in Jefferson.
