The city of Jefferson was recognized with a Tree City USA certificate at the annual Community Forestry Awards luncheon in Des Moines April 7.
Brad Riphagen (center) accepted the certificate on behalf of the Jefferson tree committee. The certificate was presented by Iowa DNR deputy director Bruce Trautman (left) and state forester Paul Tauke (right).
This is the 18th straight year Jefferson has received Tree City USA designation.
The tree committee will again be planting trees with local schoolchildren this spring. This year the planting will take place the last week in April at Daubendiek Park, as well as on S. Maple and W. Madison Streets. Approximately 60 trees will be planted.
Riphagen will also be featured in a “Trees Forever” video that will be filmed during the spring planting. It will demonstrate proper tree planting procedure and be shown around the state to instruct others.
