The Friends of the Scranton Library are hosting a free program on Saturday, April 2, featuring Scranton native Holly Carter. The event will be held at 1 pm at the H.F. and Maude E. Memorial Library in Scranton.
The group asked Holly (Hedges) Carter for a “quilting experience” that showcases her growth and art in quilting. This should be quite interesting. She is the daughter of George and Thelma Hedges. Refreshments will be served.
Carter is a scrap quilt addict. . . the smaller the piece and the more fabric variety, the better she likes it. She has always sewn fabric together and it’s been her passion. When she was young, she made her own clothes. As she aged, she realized sewing clothes was not worth the cost so she began to think of other venues . . . which led to quilting as a hobby.
She began her first scrap quilt when she was in high school. Twenty years later, she realized what she had done, starting her lifelong hobby. Today, she loves the idea that no one can recreate her quits, only the pattern. Each piece says something about her or the person who donated the fabric.
Just like a photo, each quilt is a memory. She does not believe there is a truly ugly quilt, only ugly fabric. . . but somewhere out there, your ugly is someone else’s beautiful. ~The Scranton Journal
