Beginning genealogy class well attended: Several attended the beginning genealogy class held Feb. 29. Theresa Liewer from the Iowa Genealogical Society was the presenter.  She discussed organizing tips, how to evaluate sources and learn about the pitfalls of relying on other’s research, both online and in books, and other tips on getting started on their genealogy journeys. Genealogy websites and working through some basic building blocks of genealogy were also discussed.  A few attendees brought some of their own information and had questions that Theresa helped them with.  The “genealogy bug” bit a few people that afternoon!

News in and around Rippey:

Digging for roots: Dr. John Bardole of Des Moines recently visited with his sister and husband, Nancy and Dale Hanaman and shared some family genealogy research he had completed. John is planning do more research at the Iowa Genealogy Society Headquarters in Des Moines.

Roy Bardoles visit relatives: Roy and Phyllis Bardole left Feb. 19 for a trip to visit relatives.  Phyllis shares the following – First stop was with Donald and Alice Bardole in Williamsburg.  We met at a Chinese cafe downtown and then went back to their house to visit.  We headed east and stayed in Morton, IL.  The next day we left early, but forgot about the time difference in Vincennes, IN. We got to Jay and Ellen’s for a late lunch.  It was a nice day.  Felt like spring to us, since we were knee deep in snow when we left Iowa.  We sat out on their patio and actually got sunburned!  It was warmer there than last year when we went to Orange Beach, AL. Sunday we went to church with them and had a relaxing rest of the day.

Monday was Ellen’s birthday, so she and I went shopping and Roy and Jay worked on projects.  We met for lunch at a cafe and had a nice lunch.  The rest of the day we rested and visited.

Tuesday we headed out for Jason and Allison’s in Wauwatosa, WI. We went through Illinois and by-passed Chicago!  It’s a good thing we left that day because there was a snow storm the next day in that area

At Jason’s we got Levi and Kate to school each day. Roy got a couple projects done around the house.  The gate hinge at the bottom of the stairs was broken, so it was important that that get fixed. Chase is into the climbing stage, so it helps to have him corralled a little bit.

Saturday Jason took us, Levi and Kate to a rock climbing gym.  It was crowded, but they really know how to do that! They went up and down lots of times. Roy said he might try it next time. Then we went to watch them ski.  Levi goes up on the lift by himself and down the hill and back up.  Jason puts a harness on Kate and comes down the hill.  She loves it, so they go “up and down” several times.

Sunday we went to watch the swimming lessons. Levi and Kate have it mastered. Chase is just learning, but he loves the water. You have to watch him or he will just jump in!

We left for home after that and got home to much less snow than we had when we left.  Hopefully it will be spring soon!

On Sunday, Feb. 28, Myron and Maralynn Rinker were lunch guests at the home of her sister, Shirley Dobbs of Grimes.  Other guests included Marke Rinker and his friend Jenny Voboril of West Des Moines. Shirley’s birthday was Feb. 9 but because of storms that week, the group finally found a time to gather for a late celebration.  The afternoon was spent visiting and reminiscing.
