The annual fundraising six-on-six women’s basketball classic is scheduled for Saturday evening, March 12. This year the Greene County Women are hosting the Ames Shooting Stars.
Playing for the Greene County Women will be Dawn Rudolph, Margaret Saddoris and Phyllis Drake, all of whom played six-on-six basketball as high school players, and Deb Morton, Ashley Friday, Dani Weber, Mary Pedersen, Dena Boyd and Renae Baugh, five-on-five players who have learned the eccentricities of the six-person game.
Jeff Lamoureux and Mike Holden have been recruited as referees.
This is the seventh annual event and while some things remain the same, there have been some changes too.
The ticket charge includes a grilled meal, served from 5 to 6:30 pm in the lunchroom, and admission to the game. The supper menu includes burgers, chips, baked beans, desserts and beverages.
The basketball game tips off at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be available.
A 50/50 cash drawing is planned. The memory room featuring lots and lots of Scranton school memorabilia will be open for viewing, letting guests go back in time to “the good old days” of their school years.
Music fans will want to come just to listen to the Town and Country Band of Churdan serving as a pep band. The band will play before the game tips off and at halftime.
Tickets are available at Home State Bank in Jefferson, Peoples Trust & Savings Bank in Jefferson and Scranton, at Scranton city hall at the Community Center, or at the door.
Money raised through this event will be used to help support adult and youth activities at the Scranton Community Center. Additional building improvements are on the drawing board when funding is available.
For more information about the event, contact Dawn Rudolph at 515-370-5605.
There’s plenty of parking available in the paved parking lot as well as on the streets surrounding the facility.
“You don’t want to miss this opportunity to see girls basketball played the way it used to be. Come enjoy the food and friendship of the Scranton community,” a spokesperson said. ~The Scranton Journal
