Iowa State University Extension & Outreach will offer a seven week program for families Sundays beginning March 6.
“All families have strengths and all families have areas where is improvements can be made to enable them to continue to grow into a strong and healthy family,” said Dr David Brown, human sciences specialist, family life for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.
The Strengthening Families Program: For Parents and Youth 10-14 offers families the needed skill-building techniques to build upon the strengths they already have, along with improving on areas they might need assistance with.”
The Strengthening Families Program is for families with 5th and/or 6th graders. The highly active program addresses life skills in youth, conflict resolution, effective parenting styles, and promotes positive family communication in interactive and fun ways.
The workshop, offered through Greene County ISU Extension, has proven highly effective in delaying the onset of adolescent substance use, lowering levels of aggression in youth, increasing the resistance to peer pressure in youth and reducing youth conduct problems in school.
This seven week program, which begins on Sunday, March 6 at 5 pm and continues at the same time on Sundays, March 13 and 20 and April 3, 10 & 17. The actual program will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 pm with a free catered family meal served at 5 pm. Three $100 gift cards will be given out in a drawing during first meeting.
This program is offered free of charge to all families, as funding has been received through Communities 4 Children and Community Partnerships for Protecting Children Neighborhood/ Community Network Mini-grants.
