Breda man arrested after hour-long high speed chase

An attempted traffic stop for a burned out headlight resulted in a high speed chase that lead to near Minburn in the early hours of Dec. 26.

According to information from Greene County chief deputy Jack Williams, a Greene County sheriff’s deputy initiated the stop Saturday at 2:06 am on Highway 4 near 190th St north of Jefferson. The driver of the blue Buick Century immediately accelerated up to speeds approaching 100 mph.

The deputy requested assistance and the Jefferson police department answered. The vehicle continued east on Highway 30 and then turned south on Highway 144 at Grand Junction. The Greene County deputy lost control of his vehicle on a rough gravel road and ended up in the ditch.

Deputies from Boone and Dallas counties, Perry police officers and Iowa State Patrol troopers took over the chase. The chase continued for another hour, still at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The driver of the Buick lost control just west of Dallas Center on 230th St in Dallas County.

Zachary Wailes, 21, of Breda was arrested and transported to the Greene County law enforcement center. He was charged with felony eluding, felony drug possession, possession of drug paraphernalia and several traffic violations.
