Winners told in American Legion essay contest

American Legion Post 11 announced Dec. 21 that Isabella Schroeder is the first place winner in this year’s essay contest for fifth graders. She received $50 and her essay will be forwarded to district level competition. She will also be invited to read her essay at the Memorial Day service in Jefferson.

Kali Nelson was second and received $25. Alexa Peters was third and received $10.

The students were asked to write an essay no longer than 300 words on the topic “What the Flag Means to Me.” According to American Legion member Barb Labate, coordinator of the local contest, the purpose is to help students learn more about our country’s flag, gain a greater appreciation of the flag, and learn about flag etiquette and respect for the flag.

The students watched a DVD titled “For Which It Stands” prior to writing.

The essays were all read and judged by a four-person committee composed of Legion members and community members.
