Radon test kits may be available

There may once again be radon test kits available to county residents at no charge if a grant application being submitted by Greene County public health is funded.

County environmental health director Chuck Wenthold spoke with the board of supervisors about the grant at the board’s Dec. 7 meeting. The grant would provide 50 test kits that would be available from public health or Wenthold.

Wenthold said he and public health staff are exploring whether there may be funds available through Region XII Council of Governments for radon mitigation where radon levels are high.

The board of supervisors approved a letter of support for the grant application; no funds were requested.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. It is odorless, and testing is the only way to determine its presence in a home. Radon is not unusual in Iowa.
