~by Valerie Ogren for the Greene County Genealogical Society
Meeting notice: The Greene County Genealogical Society will meet Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library. Bob Tucker will share some of his family stories. He has been researching for a number of years and we can all no doubt learn from some of his methods and sources. Please bring items or cash to donate to the local Action Resource Center (food pantry). The library is handicapped accessible and guests are always welcome. The reference library will be open at 9 am if you would like to do some research before the meeting.
New officers: New officers will be installed at this meeting and take office Jan. 1. Those elected were president Arlene Johnson, vice president Bob Tucker, recording secretary Cindy Wiggins, corresponding secretary Arlene Johnson, treasurer Elaine Deluhery, and Iowa Genealogical Society liaison Valerie Ogren.
Christmas gift ideas: Need an idea for a Christmas gift? How about a Greene County Heritage Book? We only have a few left. For information regarding cost or shipping cost, call 515-370-3570 or email me at vjogren@netins.net. Another idea would be a Pioneer Certificate for anyone who had an ancestor living in Greene County by 1870. We can even help you do the research. Cost is minimal and applications may be obtained from Shirley Ross, ph 515-386-8111 or email sross@netins.net.
New publication: Actually, it was printed several years ago but not advertised because of privacy issues – although it has been in our reference library. It is publication #2780 Greene County Births Book 5, 1918 – 1941. Because the Federal Census is kept from viewing by the general public for 72 years, we have not publicized it until now. Contact us if interested.
Reference library: During the winter months, most genealogists are hunkered down at home instead of traveling around to various libraries doing research. For that reason, our reference library will probably not be open on a regular basis. To make an appointment, call Arlene Johnson at 515-386-5431. Just a reminder that all of our Greene County publications of birth, death, marriage, census, cemetery, etc. are available for reference in the adult section of the Jefferson public library. In addition, you can also view newspaper microfilm there for Jefferson, Grand Junction and Scranton.
Contact us: Our web page is located at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iagcgs/. Email us at gcgsiowa@hotmail.com or P O Box 133, Jefferson IA 50129-0133.
Holiday greetings: Thanksgiving and Christmas are the times of the year which typically hold the most opportunities for families near and far to get together. Prepare now to make those gatherings valuable times for sharing stories and listening anew for accounts to make your family history chronicles that much more complete and richer. Just as we are always on the prowl for one more document to shed a different, new light on an ancestor and her or his family, let’s be forever aware of situations where new stories and vignettes may fill some gaps in our ancestral knowledge. These stories make our understandings of the past more comprehensive and more interesting. We hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and will have a very Merry Christmas.
