The Jefferson park and recreation department welcomed nine youth basketball teams to the Greene County Community Center during the first week of the grade school basketball season.
The league plays every Saturday through Dec. 19 (excluding Nov. 28). Seventy-seven youngsters in grades 4-6 are playing on 11 JPRD teams. There are 52 teams total in the league including young athletes from Paton-Churdan, Ogden, Southeast Valley, Perry and Stratford. The Greene County Community Center will host eight half-court games each Saturday starting at 9 am.
The coaches are all volunteers. In Jefferson, the games provide high school players an opportunity to see they game from another angle – they don’t coach, but they officiate.
JPRD assistant director Sean Ostendorf handled the scheduling for the entire league.
