A home at 304 E. Garfield St was significantly damaged Tuesday evening in a fire that apparently started in a bedroom, according to Jefferson fire chief Randy Love.
When the fire department arrived at 9:45 pm, flames were coming from a bedroom window but the fire had not yet spread to the rest of the one-story house. Love said it took the firefighters about 45 minutes to contain the fire and they were on the scene for about two hours. The entire house received considerable smoke and water damage.
The fire was reported by Kelly Parks, a neighbor who saw the fire from her home.
The cause of the fire was not obviously apparent and Love said an investigator has been called in.
The home is owned by Michael Potthoff of Panora and rented to Hermelinda Lazzo and Juan Guzman.
