Meeting notice: The Greene County Genealogical Society will meet Saturday, Nov. 7, at 10 am in the basement meeting room of the Jefferson public library. Arlene Johnson will present the program “A Special Uncle.” If you have a short family story you would like to tell, come prepared to share – if there is time. The library is handicapped accessible and guests are always welcome. The reference library will be open at 9 am if you would like to do some research before the meeting.
New officers: The nominating committee will present a slate of officers for 2016. Members will vote at this meeting. New officers will be installed in December.
Veterans’ Day: November 11 will again afford us an opportunity to remember our veterans and memorialize their sacrifices, as well as their stories. Make this Veterans’ Day a day of active remembering. Honor members of your family currently in military service, as well as your military ancestors, by writing biographical sketches, capturing images of photographs and military documents, and sharing them with relatives. Compiling information about your ancestors’ military contributions and placing that information where it will be preserved and presented to generations of interested researchers and genealogists is an important and meaningful way of honoring and paying tribute.
Thanksgiving: The upcoming holiday season is a great time to gather and share your family information. Our family had an opportunity to have a “cousins” reunion recently when two nephews from California and one from Minnesota came to visit. We hadn’t seen the California kids for 13 years. It was nice to have the younger generation take over the planning – and they even allowed the older generation to attend. I heard quite a few “I remember when . . . “ stories being shared.
Reference library: If you have an interest in family history but need help getting started, we have volunteers in our reference room every Wednesday from 1 to 4 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. We have an online computer and a copy machine available. If your family has compiled a family history, we would welcome a donated copy for our collection.
