P-C may move away from Sunday graduation

Mortar board and diplomaThe two high schools in the county will likely not have their commencements at the same time next May, as has been the case the past several years.

Greene County graduation is set for Sunday, May 22, at 2 pm. “It would be nice to get to the point where we aren’t exactly the same as Greene County,” Paton-Churdan principal Annie Smith told the board at its regular meeting Oct. 12. “The teachers are so supportive, and those are our kids’ friends, and anymore you hear graduations are just about any time.”

Superintendent Kreg Lensch said that with the state mandating the start date for school, he thinks the great majority of districts will use that same May 22 date. Lensch will be at the Glidden-Ralston graduation at 2 pm on the May 22.

Smith plans to talk seniors and their parents and have a suggested date for the board at its Nov. 10 meeting. Saturday, May 21, is under consideration. Board president Steve Burrell suggested that once an alternate day is selected, that be the “expected” day every year.
