‘You Had a Plan, But….’ is retirement planning for young adults

Iowa State University Extension’s Retirement: Secure Your Future effort is not aimed just at people within five or 10 years of retirement. A workshop slated for Oct. 26 titled “You Had a Plan, But…” is aimed at persons in the 20s and 30s, encouraging them to take the first step to their future. “Small steps taken today lead to big rewards down the road – 30, 40 or more years,” a spokesperson said.

“At age 20-something or 30-something it is difficult to think about yourself in later life. Today you are beginning a career, buying a home, getting married, welcoming children into the world, paying off student loans and just trying to get to the next paycheck.

“The future you enjoy in later life is built on the decisions you make today. Can you ‘find’ $5.48 per day, $38.46 a week or $167 per month to invest in a tax advantaged retirement account? If left untouched, at an average 8 percent rate of return for 48 years, you could have more than a million dollars. Invest a few more dollars each year to reduce the time line to your million dollars.”

“You Had a Plan, but….” is offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach as part of the Retirement: Secure Your Future effort. Additional workshops are available for midcareer and those closer to retirement.

Young adults in their 20s and 30s are invited to attend the workshop Monday, Oct. 26, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Greene County Extension office to learn how to plan for their future. A fee of $15 will help to off-set direct expenses and to support the Human Sciences County Extension Program.
