Coach recaps eighth grade volleyball season

Greene County eighth grade volleyball coach Teresa Green summed up the 2015 season saying,  “This eighth grade girls’ volleyball team showed continuous improvement throughout the season.  They have a strong work ethic, as well as a positive and fun attitude.”

The A squad was 17-11, the B squad was 21-5, the C squad was 3-0 and the D squad was 2-0 in games. In matches, the A squad was 5-3, the B squad was 8-0, and the C squad and D squad were both 1-0.

“Our overall game record was 43 wins and 16 losses, which is indicative of how athletic these girls are.  Serving was one of their main strengths, along with their daily camaraderie. We ran a 5-1 offense with Harleigh Weir and Sophia Havens as our setters.  As our season progressed, Harleigh did most of our setting as we liked Sophia Havens playing middle,” Green said.

Top servers were Kylie Roach who served 145 for 155 for 94 percent with 71 aces; Julia Saul who served 59 for 68 for 87 percent with 17 aces; Harleigh Weir who served 142 for 167 for 85 percent with 74 aces; Sophia Havens who served 107 for 130 for 82 percent with 30 aces; Paige Heaning who served 80 for 99 for 81 percent with 41 aces; Harjot Dhesian who served 34 for 43 for 79 percent with 10 aces; Abby Kozal who served 53 for 69 for 77 percent with 28 aces; Ellie Madson who served 90 for 118 for 76 percent with 53 aces; and Aubrey Heupel who served 67 for 93 for 72 percent with 38 aces. As a team, the eighth graders served 845 for 1,068 for 79 percent with 392 aces.

“We will see good things from these athletes in their next four years of high school.  They love the game of volleyball and are very coachable,” Green said.

The eighth grade volleyball team had 12 members and two managers: Maya Anderson, Harjot Dhesian, Sophia Havens, Paige Heaning, Aubrey Heupel, Megan Higgins, Abby Kozal, Ellie Madson, Kylie Roach, Julia Saul, Tieryn Tucker and Harleigh Weir along with managers Natalie Payan and Julie Blackmer.
