Women who own or manage farmland in Iowa’s Raccoon River watershed are invited to attend a free upcoming conservation discussion about soil health and the future of their farmland.
Discussions are planned Saturday, Oct. 10, in Jefferson – Meet at 9 am at the Milwaukee depot at 509 E. Lincoln Way; lunch and a visit to Chris Henning’s Franklin Township farm; day concludes by 3 pm at the depot. AND Saturday, Oct. 29, in Coon Rapids – Meet at 9 am at the Burr Oak shelter at Whiterock Conservancy, 1436 Highway 141; incudes lunch and a tour of the conservancy; day concludes by 3 pm at the shelter.

Nearly half the farmland in Iowa is currently owned or co-owned by women. Women Caring for the Land offers a peer-to-peer, informal discussion format to allow women landowners to talk about their individual farm management goals, facilitated by women conservationists. One recent participant said, “This has given me some understanding of what my husband talks about. I came to this meeting with no understanding – I am excited about the projects possible to protect the Iowa soil and feel this meeting has helped me in the beginning to learn about farming.”
The meetings are co-sponsored by Women, Food and Agriculture and the Raccoon River Watershed Association and are part of the WFAN’s Women Caring for the Land program.
