Greene County high school students will hear Friday morning about opportunities to remain in the county after high school or return after college at a Career Fair at the high school Friday morning. The Career Fair is planned by Greene County Development Corporation in collaboration with school administrators.
Local employers sending representatives include John Deere, Scranton Manufacturing, Louis Dreyfus LLC, Greene County Medical Center, West Central Coop, Wild Rose Casino & Resort, Caleris, Jefferson Telecom and Home State Bank.
Presenters have been asked to provide general information about their business; what types of jobs are available, including earning potential and benefit packages; and the skills students should develop in high school to make them better potential employees.
The Career Fair is not intended to a recruitment or hiring event, but informational for the students. “We have a lot to offer young graduates, we just need to make sure they know what we have,” GCDC executive director Ken Paxton said.
“Iowa has historically had a talent drain as young people graduate and look for opportunities outside of Iowa,” Paxton said. “If students are informed of the impressive growth businesses they have here in their own backyard they might consider remaining in their hometown or returning after college/trade school or a failed effort in another location. They can’t be excited about what we have here if they don’t know what is going on, what the job opportunities are (including pay and benefits) and what our local businesses are looking for in employees.”
Paxton hopes the Career Fair will open doors that lead to internships, apprenticeships, business tours and repeat visits to the high school by area employers. My intent is for the Career Fair to be a door opener followed up by internships, apprenticeships, business tours and repeat visits to the high school by our businesses.
