Following are excerpts of activities reported by the Jefferson police department:
Wednesday, Sept. 30: At 8 am an officer arrested DeAnn Goff, 33, of Jefferson at on an outstanding Greene County warrant for theft – fourth degree*. At 11:14 am an officer arrested Joseph Jabaay, 36, of Jefferson on outstanding Story County warrants for contempt of court – resist order or process – controlled substance violation*. Jabaay was transported to the Greene County LEC to await pickup by a Story County deputy. At 3 pm a complainant reported a juvenile male had been assaulted at the Webb House. The officer is investigating the complaint. At 3:58 pm a complainant reported the theft of a 911 tribute flag from a residence in the 400 block of N. Pinet St.
Tuesday, Sept. 29: At 11:54 am several calls were received of two huskies running at large originating in the 500 block of E. Madison St. One of the animals was eventually caught in the 600 block of S. Chestnut Street and placed in the animal shelter. At 3:53 pm a complainant reported a rabbit cage had been entered and two rabbits had been killed at a residence in the 500 block of E. Garfield St. There were scratch marks on the cage indicating an animal had been there. The officer suspected the two huskies that had been running at large earlier in the day and will be following up on the complaint.
Monday, Sept. 28: At 9:39 am staff at Wells Fargo reported a customer had deposited a counterfeit $20 bill. At 5:38 pm staff at Hy-Vee reported shoplifting. A female was observed taking vodka from the store twice in the same day without paying for it. An investigation was initiated.
Sunday, Sept. 27: At 1:08 pm a complainant reported three bolts had been stolen out of a vehicle parked in the 700 block of W. Washington St the evening prior. At 8:01 pm an officer was advised of a possible intoxicated driver in the 700 block of W. South St. A traffic stop in the 300 block of S. High Street resulted in the arrest of Tammy Kirk, 42, of Jefferson for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence – first offense*.
Saturday, Sept. 26: At 2:03 am while on patrol in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St an officer was flagged down by a group on the sidewalk. The group reported a male had displayed a knife while engaged in an argument. The male had left the area as the officer arrived. The incident remains under investigation at this time. At 9:35 am the Perry police department contacted an officer regarding a local resident that was suspect of a forged check at a local business in their city. At 5:27 pm an officer investigated a personal injury accident where a golf cart had struck a parked pickup truck in the 600 block of W. Madison St. Carla Sims was westbound in the 600 block of W. Madison on a golf cart and struck the rear of a parked 2005 Dodge Ram truck owned by Steven Scheffler. Sims was transported to Greene County Medical Center by ambulance. The golf cart sustained an estimated $400 in damage. There was no damage done to the pickup. Sims was cited for unlawful golf cart operation as she did not have a valid license. At 8:14 pm an officer was advised of a request to look for an injured hawk or eagle in the 1000 block of N. Grimmell Road. A group that rehabilitates animals had received a report of an injured bird in the area.
Friday, Sept. 25: At 10:54 am a complainant reported criminal mischief and burglary to a camper in the 300 block of N. Maple St. A window had been broken out and a fire extinguisher had been discharged inside the camper. Two juvenile suspects were identified. Charges are pending completion of the investigation. At 1:09 pm personnel at Gospel Open Bible Church reported criminal mischief to a sign at the church. Charges are pending. At 3:04 pm an officer arrested Nicholas Balderas on an outstanding warrant for public intoxication*. At 4:53 pm Sarah Stott reported a hit and run collision at 707 S. Oak St. Stott had parked her car facing north on the east side of the street and went inside a residence. Upon returning to her vehicle 15 minutes later, she was unable to open the door and found it had been struck by an unknown vehicle. White paint transfer was found on the vehicle. The officer estimated $2,200 in damage to her 2012 Chrysler Town and Country van. At 7:46 pm Lori Wheeler requested an officer at 807 N. Wilson to report a two vehicle collision that occurred on private property at 301 E. Perry Street the day prior.
Thursday, Sept. 24: At 11:48 am staff at Kum and Go reported shoplifting. A female was observed on video surveillance taking an item off a shelf and placing it in her purse. The incident remains under investigation. At 11:59 am an officer took possession of a plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine which was found lying on the ground at Walnut and Pinet St. At 3:41 pm a complainant reported a possible trespass at a residence in the 400 block of E. Park St. At 6:06 pm a complainant reported trespass at a yard in the 300 block of N. West St. A vehicle had been driven across private property.*** Pursuant to a report of shoplifting at Hy-Vee on Sept. 16, warrants have been issued charging Jody Lyn Schad, 40, of Jefferson with theft-fifth degree and driving while barred*. ***A warrant has been issued charging Nicholas Anthony Balderas, 23, of Jefferson with public intoxication*. The charge stems from an incident at Hy-Vee on Sept. 18. ***A warrant has been issued charging Fredrick Joseph Joy, 54, of Carroll for operating without owner’s consent. The charge stems from an investigation initiated on Sept. 13 where a vehicle was allegedly taken from a residence in the 200 block of W. Adams St and not returned. ***Pursuant to an investigation initiated on March 24 at a residence in the 400 block of W. Russell St, warrants have been issued charging Alysha Nicole Dehoet, 37, of Jefferson with possession of methamphetamine-first offense and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Wednesday, Sept. 23: At 9:09 am officers responded to a residence in the 300 block of N. Locust St for a reported domestic situation. The officer’s investigation led to the arrest of Brittany Kay Smith, 28, of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault – second offense (serious misdemeanor)*. Patrick Michael Kennedy, 31, of Jefferson was also arrested for an outstanding Greene County arrest warrant. At 2:02 pm officers were requested at a residence in the 300 block of N. Oak St for possible narcotic related items that were located inside the residence. The officer is investigating. At 3:08 pm officers were called to a residence in the 100 block of E. Washington St for a domestic situation. Officers arrived and mediated the situation. It was decided that the male would leave the residence for the day to diffuse the situation.
At 4:14 pm officers were called back to the residence for a reported domestic assault. Officers arrested Ann Gillespie Sayre, 55 of Jefferson for domestic abuse assault – second offense (serious misdemeanor*. At 9:33 pm an officer investigated a two vehicle accident in the Fareway parking lot. Izabelle Esther was westbound in the parking lot as Mark Samuel Kendall was southbound. Esther’s 1994 Ford F-150 struck the driver’s side of Kendall’s 1997 GMC Sierra. Damage to Esther’s vehicle was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Kendall’s vehicle was estimated at $2,000.
Tuesday, Sept. 22: At 9:26 am an officer investigated a traffic collision in the Greene County High School student parking lot. John Taylor was driving a 2001 Chevrolet pickup and was attempting to pull into a parking stall when the right rear of his pickup made contact with a parked 1999 Chevrolet Blazer owned by Joshua Lawson. Damage to Lawson’s vehicle was estimated at $1,300 and damage to Taylor’s pickup was $900. No citation was issued as most traffic offenses do not apply outside the roadway right of way. At 9:52 am an officer was advised of an intoxicated driver in the Hy-Vee parking lot. The vehicle was stopped at Casey’s (N. Lincoln Way). Robert Staiert, 40, of Carroll, was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence – third or subsequent (class D felony), no driver’s license, operating a vehicle without in ignition interlock device*. At 5:52 pm staff at Greene County Middle School reported the theft of a blue Iowa Central duffle bag which had been left on the east steps of the building the evening prior. Two boys on bicycles believed to be yellow or white were observed on video surveillance taking the bag about 8 pm.
Monday, Sept. 21: At 7:38 am a complainant reported an abandoned vehicle at in the 300 block of N. Wilson. The officer determined the vehicle had been previously damaged by criminal mischief and had four flat tires. The owner was contacted regarding having it removed. At 9:11 am staff at the Jefferson public library reported criminal mischief and littering at the library. Empty alcohol bottles, miscellaneous items and human feces were found in some bushes. It appeared someone had been sleeping there during the overnight hours. A possible suspect was identified and will be trespassed from the property. At 11:10 am staff at Kum and Go reported shoplifting. An investigation was initiated. At 1:58 pm an officer investigated a backing collision. Kelli Luther attempted to back a 2009 Chevrolet Impala from a driveway in the 100 block of E. Clark St but struck a 1988 Yacht Club trailer being towed by a 1992 Chevrolet truck driven by William Dimig. Luther was cited for unsafe backing upon a highway. Damage to her vehicle was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Dimig’s trailer was estimated at $500. ***Pursuant to a complaint of a vehicle being taken without parental permission on Sept 10 in the 600 block of W. State Street, a 15-year-old female has been charged with operation without owner’s consent and has been referred to Juvenile Court Services.

Saturday, Sept. 19: At 6:40 am an officer charged Mason Fryberger, 27, of Tacoma, WA with sex offender registration violation- first offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*.The charges stem from an investigation initiated on Sept 17 at a residence in the 400 block of N. Cedar St. Fryberger allegedly moved from the residence without giving notice of address change per requirements of the Sex Offender Registry laws.
Friday, Sept. 18: At 9:34 am a complainant reported the theft of four push mowers from a residence in the 300 block of. N. Cedar St. At 11:38 am personnel at Walker Auto Center at 402 N. Elm reported a lost or stolen dealer plate. At 2:38 pm an officer investigated a motor vehicle collision with a fire hydrant at Tri County Lumber. Andrew Sedivy attempted to back a 2004 Peterbuilt in a driveway. In doing so the truck entered onto a grassy area and slid due to wet conditions into a fire hydrant. The fire hydrant was damaged. There was no damage done to the truck. At 7:50 pm an officer was advised of a male that had placed some items in a pipe coming out of the Law Enforcement Center. The officer found a male who was going to serve jail time had hidden a cigarette and lighter in the pipe. At 8:35 pm a complainant reported a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 300 block of E. Central Ave. Upon his arrival the officer was given a case containing a pipe and suspected marijuana. Beth Elerick, 49, of Jefferson was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia*. Elerick was transported to the Greene County LEC where she was booked into jail. At 9:14 pm an officer was advised of a male complaining of a medical condition at Hy-Vee. Upon the officer’s arrival, he found the male to be intoxicated. The male was transported to the Greene County Medical Center by ambulance for evaluation. Charges are pending. At 11:50 pm a complainant reported a male attempting to enter a residence in the 400 block of N. Maple St after he had been trespassed from the residence. The officer arrested Trent Robinson, 21, on an outstanding Greene County warrant for theft – fifth degree*. Robinson was transported to the Greene County LEC where he was booked and released.
Thursday, Sept. 17: At 8:13 am the Tacoma, WA, police pepartment requested an officer attempt to make contact with a resident in the 400 block of N. Cedar St regarding a reported vehicle theft in their city. At 8:55 am a resident reported attempted identity theft. At 7:09 pm a complainant reported a green 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix had been struck by a vehicle in the high school parking lot. There was white paint transfer on the passenger side door. The incident remains under investigation. At 10:34 pm staff at Kum and Go reported shoplifting. Several DVD movies had been stolen. A suspect vehicle was stopped in the 300 block of W. Reed St. Evidence was recovered. Charges are pending completion of the investigation.
Wednesday, Sept. 16: At 9:20 am a complainant reported an abandoned bicycle at a residence in the 400 block of N. Vine St. The officer found the bike had been previously reported stolen from the library and it was returned to its owner. At 7:39 pm while on routine patrol in the 700 block of N. Cedar St an officer observed a male and female walking towards the trailer park. The officer recognized the female and believed her to have a warrant. The officer entered the trailer park and found the female had taken off running. The officer gave foot chase and Nastassia Goff, 30, was taken into custody in a back yard in the 400 block of E. McKinley St on a warrant out of Boone County for parole violation. At 10:27 pm staff at Hy-Vee reported a male shoplifter who had run from a vehicle in the parking lot after being confronted for stealing from the store. A suspect has been identified and the incident remains under investigation.
Tuesday, Sept. 15: At 2:04 pm staff at Sparky’s One Stop reported several insufficient funds checks being passed by a female at the store. An investigation was initiated. At 6:15 pm a complainant reported the stop light was out at W. Russell and S. Elm St. The light was out due to a power outage. At 6:57 pm a complainant reported criminal mischief to a 2013 Chevrolet Impala parked in the 300 block of N. Wilson. The vehicle had been scratched in numerous places and all four tires slashed. Estimated damage was $9,000. At 10:38 pm staff at Casey’s (E. Lincoln Way) requested an officer for an intoxicated male at the store that did not know where he lived. The officer arrested Terry Straube, 45, of Jefferson* and transported him to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center. *** Pursuant to a complaint of stolen medication on Sept. 14 at a residence in the 400 block of N. Maple St, an officer has charged Trent Robinson, 21, of Jefferson, with theft – fifth degree*.
Monday, Sept. 14: At 7:35 pm a complainant spoke to an officer regarding a family she had allowed to stay at a residence in Alamogordo, NM, which she had heard the male had outstanding warrants out of Greene County. At 10:23 pm a complainant reported the theft of prescription medication from a residence in the 400 block of N. Maple St. The incident remains under investigation.
Sunday, Sept. 13: At 7:49 am a complainant reported a vehicle had been lent to a male and it had not been returned as agreed. The incident remains under investigation. At 4:30 pm a complainant reported three children left unattended in a vehicle in the Wild Rose parking lot. A male was returning to the vehicle upon the officer’s arrival. The officer spoke to the male and found the children had not been in any danger. The officer found the male’s operating privileges were suspended in the state of Iowa. The male made arrangements for a licensed driver to operate the vehicle.
Saturday, Sept. 12: At 4:47 pm a complainant spoke to an officer regarding a concern of criminal mischief at a rental property in the 500 block of E. State Street.
Friday, Sept. 11: At 3:19 pm a complainant reported an attempted burglary to a garage in the 300 block of W. Reed St. At 4:37 pm a complainant spoke to an officer regarding trespassing at 1106 N. Elm St. At 5:24 pm a complainant reported a bicycle stolen from the Jefferson public library. At 5:06 pm a complainant reported a male on a golf cart making gestures at her in the 800 block of W. Lincoln Way.
Thursday, Sept. 10: At 3:04 pm a complainant reported a vehicle had been taken from a residence in the 600 block of W. State St without permission by a teenage female. The vehicle was returned to the residence about an hour later. The incident remains under investigation. At 6:15 pm a complainant reported two people on skateboards impeding traffic in the 1200 block of S. Elm St.
Wednesday, Sept. 9: At 1:19 pm an officer investigated a two vehicle collision in the 1400 block of N. Elm Street. Rita Dunivan pulled from a private driveway on the west side of the road into the path of a southbound vehicle driven by McKenzie Richardson. Richardson attempted to stop and made slight contact with the Dunivan vehicle. Dunivan was cited for failure to yield upon entering a through highway. Damage to her 2003 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was estimated at $2,800. Damage to Richardson’s 1999 Honda CRV was estimated at $850. At 1:28 pm a complainant reported the burglary to a shed in the 700 block of W. Monroe St. A gas can was reported missing. At 3:13 pm a complainant reported a male harassing a family member in the 600 block of S. Cedar St. At 4:42 pm a complainant reported a minor child being harassed by another child at the Webb House. At 7:15 pm an anonymous male reported teenagers skateboarding and riding the hand rails on the overpass. At 8:45 pm a complainant reported vehicles drag racing near the high school.
Tuesday, Sept. 8: At 5:43 pm officers took a report of a stolen bicycle from the Jefferson public library. One of the officers had seen a male riding the bicycle when he had talked to him a short period of time earlier on another matter. At 6:41 pm, the male was located with the bicycle at Kelso Park. Nicholas Balderas, 23, was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property (simple misdemeanor)*. At 6:57 pm staff at Casey’s (E. Lincoln Way) reported the theft of a cell phone which had been lying on the counter in the store. Video surveillance shows a female taking the phone. The incident remains under investigation.
Monday, Sept. 7: At 4:03 am an officer observed a vehicle being driven in an erratic manner in the 200 block of N. Elm Street and stopped to speak with the driver, who had stopped in the roadway in the 300 block of S. Elm St. George Byerly, 56, of Jefferson was charged with OWI-first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. At 1:10 pm an officer was advised of an assault that had taken place at a residence in the 600 block of S. Wilson. The incident remains under investigation at this time. At 6:22 pm a complainant reported a camper westbound on County Road E-53 approaching Jefferson that was draining sewage from its tanks onto the roadway. The officer spoke to the driver at Cedar and Lincoln Way. Charges are pending at this time. At 6:43 pm a complainant reported harassment at a residence in the 400 block of W. Reed St. The officer found the accused male at a residence in the 700 block of S. Maple St engaged in an argument with another male. Nickolas Balderas, 23, of Jefferson was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct (simple misdemeanor)*. At 10:21 pm a complainant reported a male had entered her residence without permission and had broken out the widow of her vehicle at a residence in the 300 block of N. Elm Street. The officer arrested Brian Wolf, 36, of Grimes and charged him with criminal mischief – fourth degree and trespass- injury or damage greater than $200 (both serious misdemeanors)*. Wolf was booked into the Greene County jail.
Sunday, Sept. 6: At 12:24 am an officer found a bicyclist passed out on the sidewalk in the 100 block of N. Chestnut St. Bystanders assisted the male back to the fairgrounds. At 1:48 pm a complainant spoke to an officer regarding a concern of harassment occurring at a residence in the 900 block of S. Elm St. At 4:17 pm a complainant reported trespass and a shed being entered in the 40 block of N. Maple St.Nothing was reported missing from the shed. At 8:37 pm an officer was advised of a tree limb and power line down in the 600 block of S. Chestnut St.
Saturday, Sept. 5: At 9:23 am staff at Wild Rose Casino reported a male and a female sitting in a vehicle in their parking lot smoking methamphetamine. The officer made contact with the couple who denied the accusation. The officer requested the sherrif’s office K-9. A positive indication was made on the vehicle. The vehicle was searched and items were found that relate to the use of a controlled substance. John Fortisi, 27, of Madrid and Melissa Argetsinger, 29, of Grimes were both arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia (simple misdemeanor)*. The couple was booked into the Greene County jail. At 3:05 pm a complainant reported a bicycle stolen from Hy-Vee. The officer identified a suspect through surveillance video. The officer recovered the bike at a residence in the 500 block of E. State St. Edward Goff, 44, of Jefferson was arrested and charged with possession of stolen property and theft-fifth degree (both simple misdeanors)*. At 7:20 pm a traffic stop in the Super 8 parking lot resulted in the arrest of Bille Kucharo, 54, of Des Moines for operating a motor vehicle under the influence (OWI)-first offense (serious misdemeanor)*. At 11:08 pm an officer checked on a couple trespassing behind a business at 700 E. Lincoln Way. The couple was asked to leave the property.
Friday, Sept. 4: At 10 am a complainant reported the theft of a gray 26” Genesis mountain bike from a residence in the 500 block of W. Lincoln Way. At 1:40 pm a complainant reported a burglary to a vehicle and the theft of gasoline from a residence in the 500 block of N. Cedar Street. At 2:30 pm a complainant reported a burglary to a vehicle in the 400 block of E. Washington St.
Thursday, Sept. 3: At 10:30 am a complainant reported attempted identity theft at a residence in the 400 block of E. Lincoln Way. At 1:33 pm an officer arrested Jeremy Andrews on outstanding warrants out of Greene County. At 5:12 pm an officer investigated a two vehicle collision which occurred on private property at 109 Harding Road. Carri Pettry backed a 1998 Mercury Mystique into a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero driven by Miranda Schlicht. There was an estimated $1,200 in damage to each vehicle.
Wednesday, Sept. 2: At 1:11 am a complainant reported a possible burglary at a residence in the 100 block of W. Clark St. The occupants were awaken to a loud noise and found a door open and items in an entryway disturbed. At 9:20 am a complainant reported harassment and an assault that took place at the Greene County courthouse. Charges are pending. At 9:47 am a complainant reported an attempted burglary to a shed in the 600 block of W. Stanford St. At 2:32 pm an officer investigated a personal injury collision in the 500 block of W. Lincoln Way. Donna Ballentine was westbound in Lincoln Way in a 2004 Ford Ranger and struck a parked 1993 Ford Taurus owned by Daniel Hardaway. The officer’s report is pending at this time. *** An officer has charged Jeremy Ernest Andrews, 27, of Jefferson with burglary – third degree (class D felony) and theft-fifth degree and trespass- simple, (simple misdemeanors.* The charges stem from an investigation initiated on Aug. 12, 2015 whe a burglary to a residence had been reported in the 700 block of W. Madison St and a theft was reported in the 700 block of W. South St. The charges were a result of a search warrant executed on Aug. 17, 2015 at 606 W. Washington St where stolen property was recovered.
Tuesday, Sept. 1: At 4:40 am a traffic stop in the 1100 block of E. Lincoln Way resulted in the arrest of Craig Darwin Presley, 54, of Lake View for operating while intoxicated –second offense (aggravated misdemeanor)*. He was also cited for excessive speed (46 mph in a 35 mph zone), failure to prove security against liability, failure to carry a registration card, improper brake light, and windshield/window requirements. Presley was transported to the Greene County law enforcement center where he was booked into the Greene County jail. At 8:57 am a complainant reported a burglary at a residence in the 900 block of N. Pinet St. The residence had been entered through an upstairs window and an iPhone 4 and case were missing. At 4:19 pm an employee at Oly’s Corner reported a gas drive off in the amount of $25. A male wearing a fluorescent yellow shirt with reflective stripes pumped gas into a gray or silver regular cab Ford pickup truck and was talking on the phone at the time. The male drove off without paying for the gasoline. At 5:52 pm a complainant reported a burglary at a residence in the 100 block of E. Washington St. A door had been kicked in and the apartment had been rifled through. Several items including firearms were reported stolen. The incident occurred sometime since the first week of July.
