More than 50 youngsters attended the annual Greene County Outdoor Day last Saturday at Slininger Woods west of Jefferson.
The free event included six stations where youngsters learned about shotguns, rifles, black powder, archery, trapping and tomahawks. All participants had the opportunity to visit each station during the day.
The National Wild Turkey Federation Jakes Day event was a cooperative effort of many. Greene County Pheasants Forever provided ear and eye protection, volunteers, and the noon meal for 53 registered participants various parents/guardians and 20 volunteers. Deal’s Orchard provided apples for the lunch.
Organizers thanked the Greene County Sportsman’s Club for use of the facilities and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for providing a well stocked trailer with all kinds of equipment.
Also providing experienced volunteers were the 4-H Shooting Sports, Wild Turkey Federation, Raccoon Valley Muzzleloaders, Greene County Peace Officers and other volunteers with expertise in their fields. The volunteers at many of the stations provided equipment as well.
Participants came from Jefferson, Scranton, Grand Junction, Rippey, Churdan, Gowrie, Panora, Boone, Polk City, Ogden, Ralston, Arcadia and Coon Rapids.
