Jean Borgeson and Dennis Ulrich of Rippey were part of the welcome home ceremony for the Brushy Creek Honor Flight that was held at the Fort Dodge Regional Airport on Saturday night, Sept. 19.  It was an impressive crowd of all ages who gathered to welcome the veterans.

The flight was delayed until 11:15 pm, but the band played and people visited, so the time passed quickly. There was a table of all sorts of craft items to make welcome signs and the kids in the group took advantage.

The plane arrived and the announcer asked two families to come to the front of the line of people. The rest of us were asked to stand in silence as these families left the area with their folded flags that were presented to them. Their veterans, who were scheduled to be on the flight, had passed away.  That brought a lump to the throat and a tear to the eye.

As each of the other veterans was announced, the crowd cheered and waved their flags as they walked the people-lined area to the terminal. Many counties were represented by their veterans, but Osceola County had 15 and they also had the loudest cheering section.  The last man off the plane was Bob Glenn of Grand Junction, who got just as many cheers as the first.

Our Rippey veteran was LaVere Derry and it was fun to see the surprise on Bev’s face, as well as LaVere’s, when they saw us.

Coincidently, LaVere and Bob were inducted at the same time in February 1952 and upon discharge, were on the same train coming home. The story they told is that the train wasn’t going to be stopping in Grand Junction, but the conductor arranged it to slow down so they could both jump off. Bob’s father was one of the section men working in the area at that time, and since he didn’t know Bob was coming home, he sure was surprised.

Honor Flight, bannerSharon Glenn Kroger of Harlan, Catherine Glenn of Grand Junction, and Beverly Derry and Jean Borgeson of Rippey  hold a banner made by the Ames middle school seventh graders when the plane landed. Sharon’s sister-in-law is their teacher. The veterans were very appreciative of the effort of these kids. All the veterans have guardians on the trip, and when LaVere’s guardian couldn’t make it, the Glenns’ son-in-law Randy went instead.  All the participants agreed this was a huge highlight of their lives.

Rippey Lions Club meets: The Rippey Lions Club enjoyed a meal served by Connie Neese and Bev and LaVere Derry at their regular meeting. President Dick Bardole led the business meeting.

Rick Fazel was welcomed as a new member. Nancy Hanaman and David Wells will paint the merry-go-round at Osborn Park to complete the Lions Club park project there. The group will donate money to cover the cost of a BEEP baseball to be used at a tournament next summer for the visually impaired. This is a special Lions Club project. There will be discussion later regarding donations to the Leader Program and Camp Hertko Hollow, a camp for children with diabetes.

Members were reminded of the donation boxes and the Rippey library, the Rippey United Methodist Church and local businesses for used glasses, lenses, and hearing aids. The program was presented by Pastor Paul Burrow sharing slides of recent trip to England.

The next regular meeting on Oct. 1 will be a potluck meal with Nancy Burrow coordinating and Harlan DenBeste and Keith Devilbiss in charge of the program.

News in and around Rippey:

Roy and Phyllis Bardole left Sept 7 for the US Soybean Export Council annual meeting in Minneapolis, MN.  It was good to meet a lot of old friends, Phyllis said.

Wednesday morning they headed up to Duluth for a couple days.  They like to see the ore ships come in and walk the boardwalk along Lake Superior.  It was beautiful weather so they had a relaxing time. Friday morning they headed to Wisconsin and drove along the western edge. They enjoyed the scenery and not being on a schedule. They arrived home Saturday noon. Even after the 7 1/2 inches of rain in their gauge after Sunday night’s downpour, Pete was able to be back in some fields to put on cover crop.

Dale and Nancy Hanaman accompanied their nephew Scott Bardole to Central College in Pella for the volleyball game with Buena Vista University. Scott’s daughter Maddie is a member of the Buena Vista team. Central won this game. This was the first Iowa Conference contest for the two teams.

Following a busy couple of days preparing for and attending their grandson Schyler Bardole’s wedding, Phil and Toni Roberts were able to rest awhile on Sunday before taking their son and grandson Matt and Marshall Roberts out for lunch and some one-on-one time.  It was great to have so many of the family together for such a wonderful event!

After Sunday’s lunch date, Phi and Toni drove grandson Marshall back to Emmetsburg where he lives.  While they were there, they also got to see granddaughter Morgan and her son Wesley who are now back from Florida. On the way home they made a stop in Adaza to see the bride and groom’s new home and enjoyed sharing a Sunday night tradition of popcorn and pop while the couple opened their wedding gifts. It was a whirlwind weekend but well worth it to have family so close to enjoy.

Saturday guests in the home of Virgene Morse were Diane and Madelyn Ostendorf of Madrid.  Madelyn interviewed Grandma for a school project and learned about Grandma’s growing up days. On Sunday, Kelsey Blanshan of Ankeny visited and brought taco pizza for lunch.  They spent the afternoon going through Grandma’s craft boxes.
