The Greene County varsity volleyball team opened its season at the South Central Calhoun tournament Saturday, Sept. 5. The team won four of 10 games and finished third in the pool.
The Rams topped South O’Brien 21-19, 21-19. Against the host Titans the Rams went 1-2 with scores 21-17, 18-21 and 19-21. They dropped two to the Audubon Wheelers, 14-21 and 19-21. Scores against Manson Northwest Webster were 21-9, 15-21, 15-17.
“As inexperienced as our players are, they played right with more experienced teams. We served aggressively and were competitive offensively,” coach Donna Carhill said. “We need to continue to work on our passing and consistent play.”
The season started in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Sept. 8 in Maxwell against the CMB Raiders. The Rams lost to the Raiders with a win in the first game followed three close losses. Game scores were 25-15, 21-25 23-25 and 20-25.
In the first game, the Rams were behind 0-12 when senior Katelyn Hagen got to the service line. She served 16 consecutive times and the team rallied for the win.
Hagen continued strong at the service line, going 30 for 30. She also had two kills. Junior Hannah Stein was nine for 10 serving and had 11 kiss. Junior Nadia Fisher was 10 for 13 serving and had 12 kills. Junior Kenna Marquart was 10 for 12 serving and senior Alison Gallagher was five of seven serving.
Carhill noted that the team has improved, but inconsistent serving coupled with unfortunate hitting errors caused difficulty.
The Rams play in Nevada Thursday, Sept. 10.
