Carlson a winner in the early days of the Iowa State Fair

Results in judging of the 228 divisions in the food department of the Iowa State Fair are starting to be announced and Marianne Carlson of Jefferson, Greene County’s most successful State Fair foods competitor, has already been named.

Carlson  won first place and a $100 cash award in the Knapp’s Build Your Best Cheesecake competition, judged Thursday, the first day of the fair.

Entries were judged on general appearance, texture and flavor.

Carlson placed second in the main dish division of the Nostalgic Comfort Food competition judged Friday.

Contestants were challenged to create a retro or nostalgic dish from scratch that featured the taste of days gone by. Each entry was accompanied by a written description of why the dish is nostalgic to the cook. Entries were judged on taste, originality and appearance.

Overall winner was Pamela Reynolds of Norwalk. Reynolds tied for first place with Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines in the main dish division.

Carlson was also a winner in the Chocolate Storybook Candies competition judged Friday. She was first in the variations of candy – popcorn class and third place overall. She also received honorable mention in the fudge with nuts class.

Entries were judged on flavor, texture and general appearance.
