The Greene County softball team is a game away from a repeat appearance at the state tournament after an 11-3 win over the Carroll Kuemper Knights in Jefferson Friday. The game was a Class 3 Region 8 semifinal game.
Senior pitcher Marissa Promes struck out eight batters and walked none. She allowed three earned runs. Her record on the pitching rubber is 28-3. The Rams had no errors.
The Ram had seven runs on the board before the Knights scored. Emma Saddoris hit a two run home run in the second inning, Emily Christensen brought in a run with a double in the third inning. The Rams scored again in fourth inning with singles by Bailey Godwin and Promes and the help of a pair of Knights errors.
The Knights scored a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Rams scored in the bottom of the inning. The Knights scored two in the fifth, but the Rams scored three more in the sixth.
Saddoris hit a double along with the home run; she walked twice. Christensen finished with a double, a single and one walk. Tressa Rasmussen hit a double, Paup hit two singles, and Kayla Mobley, Promes, Sydney Koch and Bailey Godwin had singles. The Rams left seven runners on base.
The Rams and the Knights both had 11 hits, but 10 of the Knights’ hits were singles. The committed six errors for the game and left six runners on base.
The Rams are 29-6 overall. The Knights ended their season at 20-14.
The Region 8 final is Monday at 7 pm in Stuart. The Rams will play the Atlantic Trojans (32-10) for the Region 8 title and a place in the state tournament. The Rams were third in the state in 3A in 2014.
