The Greene County Ram softball team started a journey that will hopefully lead to the state tournament at Harlan Rogers Park later this month with a 10-2 first round post season win in Class 3A Region 8 over Pocahontas Area in Jefferson Wednesday.
Pitcher Marissa Promes pitched the entire game and improved her season record to 27-3. She retired the first 13 batters, and with the Rams up 10-0 in the top of the fifth inning Promes was close to posting a five inning perfect game. But, a dropped fly ball put an Indian runner on base. The Indians followed with two doubles and a single, and the score was 10-2. The Rams walloped the ball several times in the fifth and sixth innings, but those were fielded easily.
Promes struck out 10 batters and walked none while giving up one earned run on three hits. For the season she has 215 strikeouts and 38 walks.
The Rams scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth. They had three errors.
The win puts the Rams’ record at 28-6 for the season. The Pocahontas Indians finished their season at 7-17.
Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) won its opening round game against East Sac County and will play the Rams in Jefferson Friday at 7 pm. The winner of that game will play the winner of an Atlantic-Shenandoah match-up in the Region 8 title game next Monday in Stuart. The Region 8 winner will play in the state tournament.
