The Greene County Rams’ summer teams traveled different directions Thursday evening with different results. The softball team went northeast to play the Roland-Story Norsemen in Roland and returned home with its ninth straight win on the season. The baseball team went southeast to play the Winterset Huskies in Winterset and came home with a non-conference loss.
The girls had a 7-2 lead going into the top of the seventh inning and added eight insurance runs. Final score was 15-2. For the game, Sydney Koch hit a triple and a single and had three runs batted in. Bailey Godwin hit a double and three singles for two RBI, Emily Christensen had a double and a single for three RBI, and Hannah Onken hit a double for two RBI. Kayla Mobley had a single and got two RBI, and Emma Saddoris and Carleigh Paup both had a pair of singles.
Marissa Promes struck out five batters, walked two, and allowed five hits. Both the Norsemen’s hits were earned.
The Ram softball team is ranked fifth in Class 3A with a 9-0 overall record. The girls are 6-o in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference. Roland-Story is 3-3 in the HOIAC after the loss to the Rams.
The next varsity game is a home game Monday against the North Polk Comets. A home game scheduled for Friday against Gilbert has been rescheduled as one of a double header in Gilbert June 30.
The Greene County varsity baseball team suffered an 8-3 loss in non-conference baseball Thursday to the Winterset Huskies in Winterset.
Junior Tyler Beger was starting pitcher. He pitched 1-1/3 innings and allowed six runs, all earned. He walked four batters, hit one, and allowed three hits. Senior Jordan Hostetler relieved Beger and gave up two runs, one earned. Hostetler struck out two batters, walked one, and gave up eight hits. Hostetler was tagged with the loss.
The Rams’ bats were quieter than in recent games, connecting for six hits, all of them singles. Senior Colton Fitzpatrick hit a pair of singles for two runs batted in. Hostetler and senior Riah Nelsen, and juniors Daric Whipple and Riah Nelsen also hit singles.
The Rams are now 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the HOIAC.
