The Greene County varsity softball team used a seven-run second inning to claim a 9-7 win over Colfax-Mingo Wednesday evening in Jefferson.
Senior Marissa Promes pitched all seven innings. She allowed seven hits and the Tigerhawks’ runs were all earned. Promes had 13 strike-outs and six walks and hit one batter.
The Tigerhawks took an early lead after a two-run homer in the first inning. The Rams answered with a Promes double and a bases loaded walk. Junior Carleigh Paup and senior Emily Christensen hit doubles in that inning.
The Rams jumped out in front in the second inning with a three-run homer by senior Hannah Onken. Senior Emily Christensen hit a single for and RBI and junior Sydney Koch got an RBI on a double. Seniors Bailey Godwin and Emma Saddoris doubled in the inning, and senior Kayla Mobley hit a single.
Tigerhawk pitcher Amy Russell held the Rams to only one hit the rest of the game, a single in the fifth inning by Paup.
The Rams are 1-0 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
