Greene County elementary students and their families celebrated reading Monday evening with a picnic supper and a special performance by artist/singer/songwriter Chad Elliott. According to district reading specialist Julie Neal, about 225 children and parents attended.
Elliott spent the afternoon at the school, singing and painting with kindergartners and first graders, and then singing and writing with second and third graders.
The program was the third child/parent event planned with a goal of helping parents learn to help their children with reading and math at home. State funds were received for that purpose because of the school’s designation as a school in need of assistance (SINA).
The first event, Jingle Read in December, focused on reading. The second event, was a recent Muffins and Math. Parents and grandparents were invited to spend part of a morning at the school learning from their children math games that can be played at home.
At Monday night’s event, teachers had available many handouts for parents about reading with children, as well as lists of online resources and information about the public library’s summer reading program.
“I hope parents will remind their children to read over the summer and get them involved with the events at their libraries. The librarians excel at making reading fun for kids,” Neal said.
