Stop signs and no parking signs will soon be added in the neighborhood surrounding the new Hy-Vee store in Jefferson.
The Jefferson city council at its regular meeting April 28 had no discussion before approving a resolution to place stop signs for eastbound drivers at the corner of Adams and Vine St and at the corner of Reed and Vine St, and for westbound drivers at the corner of Adams St and Wilson, and at Reed and Vine St. The corner of Wilson and Reed St will become a 4-way stop, with stop signs placed for all drivers.
The council also approved the second reading and then waived the third reading of an ordinance pertaining to no parking zones in the neighborhood. The ordinance is not the same as what the council approved the first reading for a month ago.
The ordinance as approved prohibits on-street parking on both sides of Wilson and on the east side of Vine St between Washington and Reed St. Parking will also be prohibited on the south side of Reed St between Wilson and Elm St and on the north side of Adams between Vine and Elm.
The change in the final ordinance is that on-street parking will be allowed on the west side of Vine St. Resident Curt Hastings, who lives on the west side in the 400 block of Vine St had argued against the no parking zones when the ordinance was first presented in March.
There was only brief discussion of the no parking zones. The council’s streets committee had toured the neighborhood and met with Hy-Vee manager Lori Subbert. Council member Larry Teeples reported that “all our people in the know looked at this” and that Subbert had been helpful in the discussion. Subbert said residents on the east side of Wilson would be welcome to invite their visitors to use the Hy-Vee parking lot for short term parking.
